Dr. Garrison was my best friend's dad. All through high school and even past, Donna and I would hang out at the house on Thalia Point and sun by the pool. I was always jealous of having a dad like him.
Retrospectively, I am sure he inspired me to become a family practice doctor.
He was always supportive of our crazy antics with the drama club and the living manager scene was a family and town a tradition.
Though I have lost touch with the Garrison family after 20+ years, I wish to convey my deepest sympathy for their loss.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Garrison but once through my friendship and days of running with Roger in our younger years. I remember he was most humble and gracious, smiling and chatting with me and taking a genuine interest in getting to know me. I felt very welcomed by him and Mrs. Garrison. And although I knew his name through how well liked and admired he was in the community, meeting him made me realize what a man of true character he was. And I suspect that the way he made me feel that day was the way he made most feel who had the pleasure of knowing him.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I know he will be greatly missed.

My deepest sympathies to the Garrison family. I remember Dr. Garrison from when I played on the Princess Anne football team from 1978-1980. He was our team doctor, and he helped me through various injuries with kindness and ease. I remember during a game I had to have stitches on my nose at halftime and his calm in conducting the procedure made me realize it was going to be ok. I appreciated and was impressed by the amount of time that he gave in volunteering to help out the football team. A great guy!

Our condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Garrison. He was the family physician we remember most from our days in Virginia Beach. After we left the area, we returned several times at Christmas and our children have fond memories of the living nativity at the Garrison home.
Dr. and Mrs. Garrison both left a wonderful legacy for their children and grandchildren.

God Bless Dr. Garrison. He was our family doctor for many years when his office was near Krispy Kreme donuts. Our family had six daughters and my mother's father had been a doctor when he passed at a young age. My mother adored Dr. Garrison he reminded her so much of her own father. My sister had diabetes and Nurse Rollins would always take such good care of her. Dr. Jack provided so much more to eveyone than just medical service. Rest in Peace.

I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences on the untimely death of your father, such a great loss to all who knew him, he was a jewel among us, always giving everyone a shining example of kindness, caring, and much laughter, even though the time I spent with Jack, was all too infrequent,it brought much joy just to see him drive up, no matter what was transpiring in his life, or how busy he was,and in recent times with loss of his loving wife,he was thinking of how he could bring laughter and joy to others,we at Thalia School will miss you dearly, and you will never be forgotten?

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of your family suffering from such a great loss. Dr. Jack was family Dr. to my parents, aunts, cousins and us. I remember getting my tonsils out in 5th grade along with my older brother Joey. We walked to the operating room and he showed us what it looked like so we wouldnt be scared. He was a great doctor, but most of all he was a Great Friend.. He never knew a stranger. My father, Bucky Moore was a Police Capt in Va Beach and they were close til my father passed on 6/21/96/ Dr. Jack came to my Dad's house to pronounce him and to share hugs with all of us and try to comfort us.. He will be missed forever. Thank you all for sharing him with all of us for so long.Your Mom and Dad together again, may you all share the love they had for all of you. Be proud of what great people they were to everyone they met. May God give you strength each day to rejoice in all your wonderful memories and not be so sad, as they will always be looking down with their greatest love for you all

Your father was truly one of the kindest people I have ever met and will be missed. He shared his big heart not only with his family but with the entire community. Every time I saw him he had a big smile and a hug waiting. One of my favorite memories was him on the Williamsburg field trip. He knew more of the history than the guide and was MUCH more entertaining. Thanks for sharing him with all of us. I am sorry for your loss. You are all in my prayers.

Dr. Garrison was also our family physician. I remember sigining in to be worked in, then going home and calling every hour to see if our turn was next. Patty and I graduated from Princess Ann High School and was on Drill Team together. Then one night in the early 80's Dr. Jack called me and asked me to come to work with him and Dr. David. My first full time medical job. Now almost 30 years later I am an administrator to 7 gastroenterologist. I still think of the times with Dr. Jack and Dr. David. My prayers are with all of you. God bless your father for the wonderful ways he has touched so many peoples lives.

Dr. Garrison was my doctor when I was a child. I remember his smile, big hands and sense of humor. I too was fooled many times by the cover your other ear trick. LOL. He knew his patients. One of his colleagues put me on penicillan. The next day I had terrible hives. I returned to the office and waited in a long line. When he saw me he laughed "you're just like you mother, allergic to penicillan". A man with a big heart that cared for others and the community. Who could forget visiting the island to see the live nativity!
God Bless!

I will never forget an office visit with my middle daughter, who desparately wanted a puppy for Christmas, Dr. Garrison assured her that if Santa didn't bring her that puppy, he would get her one. I know that he would have too! What a special person, truly one to be admired and respected. God Bless! The Larson Family

Dr. Garrison treated more than injuries during his many years as the team physician for the Princess Anne Football teams. In addition helping us deal with the bumps and sprains associated with the game of football, Dr. Garrison was always available when we needed advice but, more importantly, he was always a fine example of what a husband, father and generous man of faith, substance and character looked like.

It truly feels like I have lost a member of the family. Dr. G was my doctor from the time I was 3 to well into my teens. The hours spent in the crowded waiting room seem like yesterday. Dr. Garrison was-to me...a young widowed mother of an infant at the time of our meeting...part super-hero, part surrogate father (never had one), part 'girl-friend' (no topic was off limits, and full-time caregiver of diagnostic accuracy that was legend throughout the populace and the medical community. In short, I loved him as the genuine and empathetic human being that he chose to be. I would wait for hours to see him-often with a squirming, protesting and sick child in my arms. I grumbled-along with most of the rest of the packed waiting room...swearing that I was going to find another doctor. I NEVER DID EVEN LOOK! Once we were in his examining room, being nurtured and treated, all thoughts of ever going elsewhere vanished. We always knew that our health and well-being MATTERED to Dr. Jack. He was one of a kind...and his passing leaves a hole in our family's heart as if he were a biological part of it. We send loving thoughts to all of his family and a heartfelt 'thank you' for sharing him with us through all of the years. He is already missed.

I was so saddened to read of Dr. Garrison's passing. I guess I thought he would be here forever! I remember as a child going to see him for everything from a sore throat to my brothers many mishaps! The office shared by he and Dr. Dickson on the boulevard was so sweet and I can still see every part of it even know, many years later. He was such a character!!! It would always scare me so when he would roll his chair across the room at me and grab me, but by the time I left there I knew that everything would be okay, and it was. I haven't seen him in many years, but I will never forget him for as long as I live. What a wonderful doctor and man he was!!! Rhonda Garman, Virginia Beach, Va

Miss Mary and Family,
We are so saddened to hear of Dr. Jack's passing, and he will be greatly missed. It is a very special person who touches so many lives not just as a skilled doctor, but in so many other ways. Our family became close with yours when Dr. Jack was the PAHS team physician and our Dad was coaching at PAHS in 1958. Then through the years with Thalia Methodist, Boy Scouts, and Virginia Wesleyan College. He was a source of strength and comfort when Dad passed in 1989, and Mom in 2004. There are many, many memories of Dr. Jack that are with us; helping to get the cow out of the canal that Christmas and back into the manger scene, the camping trip he and Dad went on with us in the Boy Scouts. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you always.

My deepest sympathy to the Garrison family. It was the summer of 1965 and I had a minor accident in the back yard. My mom saw Dr. Jack outside in his back yard just a short way across the water. She called over to him and he jumped into his boat and came over to our dock to check up on me. Just one of many special memories of him. What a warm and caring doctor and man. Thank you for sharing him with so many of us.

Dr Garrison was my family dr for over 35 years and i really did miss him when he has retired, I will say he had a good sense of humor, (a bit abraisive at times) but always made me feel at ease in his office, and as his patient. and I always trusted his diagnosis and recomendations, The last I talked to him was at BJs and he commented that "Yes I'm worn out" may God bless you as his surviving family.I'm sure you are all proud of your father.

So sad to hear about dear Dr Garrison's passing. He was our family doctor until he retired. He would alway pick me up and give me a big hug. He was kind, funny and caring. He would tell me to put my finger in one ear and then look in the other as to say he could see thru if I didn't...I bet he did that to many of his patients. LOl. I would love it when I ran into him on the road somewhere. Again he would pick me up and exchange a few words. I loved him. I will truly miss seeing him around here and there. He will always be in my heart. We love you Dr Garrison..

I will truly miss Dr Garrison. He was my physician from the 80s until he retired. I have a sister with "special needs" who was so fearful of doctors, she refused to go. Then I took her to see Dr Garrison and with his gentle way, he gained her trust and became her physician as well. I take comfort that he is with his loving wife now and know I was blessed to have known him.

Dr. Garrison was my grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, neighbor in Thalia. Dr Garrison would always make house calls to Naner and Pops house when were staying with them and would get sick. He was such a gentle doctor and it was obvious that he loved children.
Every Christmas we would feed the live animals at the nativity scene they had in their front yard. They made Christmas magical for me. Memories I will never forget!!

It is truly a sad day. I know that words cannot calm the saddness that his family feels today. I hope and pray that they can find some comfort in the memories of this dear man. It is odd the things you can recall. I remember when he came and spoke to my 5th grade class at Thalia Elementary. It was the first time I ever held a heart in my hands. I was at PA yesterday thinking of all the service he did for the school and its athletes. I remeber the marvelous manger display he had for so many years. The caring professional man of medicine that he was. I am so thankful for the many times he cared for my parents. No matter how sick they were they always left his office with a bounce in their step and feeling better.
Occasionally, after his retiremnt I would see him at Farm Fresh he always had a smile and a twinkle in his eye no matter how bad he felt. I remember the saddness he had one day in the parking lot when he told me the doctor had recently told hiim there little else they could do for his wife. I recall at his retirement party his dear wife saying that Jack was all her's now. Indeed. she was right and now may they be comforted with their mutual love for one another. God speed my friend and and may God bless and keep you and your family safe.

Dr. Jack was the best! My two sisters and I were in elementary school when Dr. Jack took our tonsils out. He had all three of us in one room at the hospital. After the surgery he made me walk back from the recovery room with him. When we got to the room he picked me up and threw me into the bed! I also remember the piggy back rides as a child! He was my doctor all through my childhood and most of my adult years. He was the greatest! I only wish the doctors today were more like he was! Dear Dr. Jack, the 1st time I met you was May 1951. You were a Coke Cola Delivery driver from the Fredricks Bottling Co. You would deliver coke cola in the yellow woden boxes to the Marine Mess Hall at Camp Barrett, Ouantico. If you arrived after 1500 they would get a working party of Marines to help unload your truck. I think you planned to get there after 1500 hrs just to get our help!
The Marine Corps purchased your old homestead and that land became part of our firing range. Sorry about us Marines getting a direct hit on the old Out House!
We moved to Va. Beach in 1966 and needed a Dr so someone gave us your name and we called and you came. Seeing my USMC memorabilia you asked if I had ever been stationed at Quantico and Camp Barrett. That is where our friendship blossomed.
Thank you for your years of caring service to our family and all the other patients you cared for.
The other day someone deemed you as, "the last of the real, Old Country Doctors". I'll close and say thanks for your years of service to us and hope if I make it to heaven (I know you will make it there)maybe we canshare some more old tales. Semper Fi. Floyd & Yvonne Newkirk
P.S. As I told you many times I think you were a better Coke Truck Driver than a Dr!!!!!

My husband Wes and I started seeing Dr. G in 1960. He remained our family doctor, friend, and mentor for almost forty years. I could write a book about all the "good" he did for us, our three children and so many more. He del. our first child and was one of the first people to call us when he heard of our son's death three years ago.
I also had the honor to serve on his office staff for four years and again saw first hand how he was one of the most dedicated family physcians God ever put on this earth. God broke the mold when He made Dr. Jack S. Garrison, M.D. He lost the twinkle in his eye when Mrs. Mary passed, but I know he has it back. God Bless the Garrison Family. Dear Garrison Family.
I was so saddened to read of your loss in the paper this morning. I met Jack when I moved to Va Beach in 1964 to start a practice of Oral Surgery. I had many occasions to consult with Jack
re mutual patients we treated. He was always most helpful, courteous, friendly, and quickly answered my questions about medical problems for which I needed advice. I saw Jack frequently at Va Beach General Hospital through the years. I remember him bringing some of his small patients piggy-back to the OR when they were to have tonsils removed. He was one of my patients for a minor surgical procedure years back.
Jack enjoyed a unique practice of medicine and he was loved by his many patients. His infectious smile was his greeting and he had kind words for all he spoke with. He will truly be missed in this community. He was an energetic, dedicated, and highly respected physician.
I pray for God's love and comfort and Christ's peace be with you.

As an employee of Sentara Bayside Hospital, I am very saddened to hear of this lost. I saw Dr Jack just last week and was able give him a hug and a kiss. He will be sorely missed for his sense of humor and caring attitude. My condolences to the family.

On behalf of the entire Moore family, please accept our deepest sympathy. Dr Jack was not only a wonderful doctor but also a wonderful friend. I'll remember him most for the care that he gave my mom and dad (Bucky & Dottie Moore) long after retirement, he did this as their friend. Also, for the times that he borrowed our animals for the live Christmas Nativity Scenes that brought a smile to everyone. May your memories of both your mom and dad live in our hearts forever.

Hello, my name is Barbara and I work for Dr. Michelle Kingsbury where I had first met Dr.G. With the smile and words of understanding, I have been blessed to know him and worked for him for a short time, he took me under his wing and many times would give me a great bear hug to let me know that he was always around if I needed him. He adopted me into his life, when I lost my father, and became a great father figure. And I will appreciate the last hug I had received not that long ago, and him stating that he will always be around for me. It comforts me to know that I now have a "Guardian Angel." It saddens me deeply knowing I will never see that smile or receive that hug again while on this earth, but it relief is in knowing that he is now with the love his life.
Thank you for sharing him with us.

Larry,
Susan and I are very distressed to learn of the death of your father.
Dr. Jack taught me more medicine when I was just getting into the medical malpractice arena and for that I will be forever grateful. Dr. Jack was the dean of family medicine in this town for 40 years and a true southern gentleman.
Our most sincere condolences.

Dr Garrison was our family physician from the late 1960's until the early 1990 at which time we moved out to the area. In the 1970's he gave me a job when I needed one and was a great Dr.,boss, educator, mentor and friend. We will miss him greatly. I knew he was ill and I was not able to go to see him, knowing he was there was a great comfort to my family. My children are grown and they still say to call the "Boss" with a medical question. He will surely be missed.
All of our thoughts and prayers go out to you,

Dr. Jack S. Garrison was a unique individual who spent most of his adult life in the service of others. I believe I speak for my fellow physicians who had the joyful gift of working with Jack in saying that he was capable, amazingly energetic, humorous, and most of all, completely dedicated to serving his patients. He set a high standard for all who knew and worked with him!
This community was extremely fortunate to have had Jack as a physician, leader, and dedicated father.

Hello... I work at Princess Anne Memorial Park. I had the honor of working with Dr. Garrison in the past, here at Princess Anne. In addition, my sister was seen by Dr. Garrison as a small child. What a fantastic man he was. He had a great sense of humor, and a real gift at making people feel relaxed. And what kind and beautiful blue eyes he had!! It is a wonderful thought, he and Mrs. Garrison together again. Although I only knew him through my experiences here at work, I will never forget him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends for the loss of a wonderful gentleman.

Dear Garrison family: Where do I start? What a "father" figure he was to me and I loved him. I think it started when as a 9th grader at PA; I would sneek past his reception area and hide in his office until he came in to see me. Never once did he turn me away; the world has lost a wonderful doctor and amazing man. My life is richer having known him. God Bless and be with you all during this difficult time. Love, Sandy May Filer

Dr. Jack was my family Doctor for many years untill the time he retired. He was truly one great guy. I will never forget those many days years ago when at the Boulavard medical center in Va.Bch. when his waiting room would be packed with patients, crying babies, old and young patients, on those cold winter days, but he would never turn any one away. Dr. Jack was always at Thalia UMC from when I first attended until now. He was also a volunteer buddy of mine and had wonderful stories, magnificent sparkling blue eyes, and an awesome sense of humor. He once shared with me that he had a date the first of every month with his Mary, as they always celebrated their anniversary. He was truly a kind and gentle man who will be missed, and my heartfelt sympathies go out to each and every family member. Jack - Enjoy the presence of your Mary now that you are together again.

Dr. Garrison was our family doctor starting in 1959 and for many years while our children were growing up. He delivered our oldest daughter in 1959. He was always very caring and helpful through the years. I am thankful for the years he was our family doctor. Our deepest sympathies go to the entire Garrison family. Dr. Garrison was our first experience with a doctor that made house calls, being that we lived across the street from Dr. and Mrs. Garrison, and David (at the time) in Boulevard Manor. I will always remember Dr. Garrison as one heck of a character from our neighborhood, and in themedical community. I can still see his tool belt around his waist as he scurries from patient to patient. So long Doc.
