Robert Tanner Obituary

Robert E. Tanner PORTSMOUTH - Robert Edward "Eddie" Tanner, 84, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010. Eddie was a native of Portsmouth and a member of Churchland Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his parents, Broughton and Alice Tanner; and a brother, Clyde Tanner. Eddie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and attended East Carolina University where he was a two-sport letterman. He retired as a supervisor at John C. Holland Enterprise. Eddie was an avid golfer and a former member of both Kempsville and Elizabeth Manor golf clubs. He is survived by his wife, Betty Tanner and together they shared their love of travel with good friends. His loving children are Alisa Lurcott and Michael Tanner, Sloan, Scott and Shaun Suddeth and Stacie Powell; grandchildren, Meagan and Christopher Lurcott, C. J. and Chris Powell, Evan and Eric Suddeth and Bridgette Weaver; and a brother, Broughton Tanner. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in Churchland Baptist Church by the Rev. Lawrence Coleman. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with a reception following at One Crawford Parkway. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling these arrangements. Memorials may be made to Churchland Baptist Church, 3031 Churchland Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23321 or to a charity of your choice. Steve & I were so sorry to hear about Eddie. He was such a fun loving person. I still laugh when Steve shares his memories of Eddie and Elizabeth Manor Golf Course. Sorry we were not able to attend the funeral as my sister-in=law's funeral was the same day. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Betty and the rest of your family....
