Fred Nicholson

Fred Nicholson NORFOLK - Fred Nicholson died Oct. 3, 2010 at the age of 82. He was born in Norfolk and spent his early years in the West Ghent section. Fred advanced through the Norfolk school system, graduating from Maury in 1945 during the last months of World War II, permitting him to serve as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division but with no combat stories to tell. After the army, Fred attended the University of Virginia, graduating from the law school in 1952. There followed a legal career of more than 45 years, where he specialized in federal taxation. He developed an outstanding reputation as evidenced by the many forums he participated in throughout the nation as a speaker, and the countless books and articles he prepared for publication. He combined his private practice with an involvement in academic life, serving as an adjunct professor at three law schools, Rutgers in New Jersey, Georgetown in Washington, and New York University. After years in New York and Washington, Fred returned to Norfolk where he was of counsel to the law firm Wilcox & Savage P.C. until his retirement in 2002. Fred is survived by his wife, Miriam "Mimi" and two daughters, Gail and Leslie, from an earlier marriage. The family is grateful to the staff and administration of Harbor's Edge for the excellent care Fred received. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, in H.D.
