Joseph Jaffe Obituary

Joseph S. Jaffe NORFOLK - Joseph S. Jaffe, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died June 3, 2010, shortly after his 94th birthday. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Rose Reichenthal Jaffe; his parents, Edith and Leo Jaffe; a brother, Paul Jaffe; and a sister, Hilda Jaffe Kanof. Mr. Jaffe was born in Norfolk and attended high school and college at Yeshiva University in New York. In 1940, he and Rose opened Alan's, a clothing and shoe store in Ocean View, which they operated for 30 years. Mr. Jaffe was actively involved with many volunteer organizations and was respected and admired in the community. In his synagogue, Congregation Beth El, he was a longtime board member and Gabbai. He also delivered Meals on Wheels for many years and served as co- chairman of bonds for Israel. He was one of the founders of Hebrew Academy of Tidewater, and was actively involved in fund raising for the new school. He derived great pleasure in the school's accomplishments. A love of Zionism was instilled in his early life by his father Leo. He and Rose visited Israel numerous times and they provided for their grandchildren to spend some quality time there during summer vacations. Mr. Jaffe is survived by two sons, Dr. Alan Jaffe (Norma) of Norfolk, Marvin Jaffe (Holly) of Richmond and a brother, Dr. Manuel Jaffe (Gloria); five grandchildren, Debbie Wengrofsky (Perry), Robin Schulwolf (Andrew), Hilary Dickson (David), Eric Jaffe, and Dana Jaffe and their mother, Wendy Jaffe. His eight great -grandchildren include Jennifer and Ali Wengrofsky, Grace and William Schulwolf, Benjamin, Ryan and Sophie Dickson and Asher Jaffe. A funeral will be held at Congregation Beth El at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, June 6, with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Shiva minyan will be held at the home of Alan and Norma Jaffe, 301 Brooke Ave., No. 402, Norfolk on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. The family will be at Beth El for services the remainder of the week. We thank Beth Sholom Village for the loving care given to our father during his two year stay. Donations may be made to Congregation Beth El, Hebrew Academy of Tidewater, Beth Sholom Village or to a charity of one's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk chapel, is handling arrangements. I was so sorry to hear of the passing of this very fine man. As his nurse (retired) I always looked forward to him coming into the office. He was a pleasure and I am glad that I was able to get to know him. I am sure he will be sorely missed by all.

When I and my famly returned to Norfolk in 1965 he welcomed me to the men;s minyan and I remember many Mens Club breakfasts with him and Jake Goodman. We had wonderful discussions over the years.
