Martin Cornick

Norfolk - Martin Mason Cornick, age 24, died peacefully at home on October 30, 2015, after an illness. He is survived by his mother, Mary L. Mason, by his beloved cats Jamie and Stormy, and by his aunts, uncles, and cousins. Burial will be private. Please consider a donation in Martin's memory to the Norfolk SPCA at 916 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, Va. 23504. Remember his good nature, enthusiasm, hard work and kindness. OMG I'm am sad this morning. I did not know this! I went to wish him a Happy Birthday and discovered he had passed away. I exchanged a lot of notes with him as I was an artist with music on The Weather Channel for awhile. He was always a pleasant guy with a HUGE passion for weather. I wish his family the best and hope he's celebrating his new birthday up in heaven.

Thinking about Martin one year after his death. I miss him terribly and think of him often when the skies open to show the wonders of nature.

He brought excitement and energy to the newsroom as we hustled to cover breaking news. He helped me tremendously in using software to post news stories on the internet and showed us workarounds with software that wasn't quite right.

He was happy and eager to help solve problems. I have a beautiful framed photo of Martin on my desk. It brings me comfort to see his smile.

I remember back when I was still in middle school when Martin and I first began talking. He and I were so much into weather that we pretty much chatted on a daily basis and had a lot of funny moments. We spoke frequently for the next three years as I went into high school. Then in the summer of 2011, my family took a road trip up to the Hampton Roads area, and on July 26, 2011, I was more than happy to be able to meet Martin in person at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. He was a happy and jolly person and was actually glad to get to meet me as well. We both promised to meet up again in the future, but the both of us went our separate ways and it never wound up happening.

To the Cornick family, I express my condolences deeply. Martin was so young to leave this world, let alone days after his 24th birthday. I will dearly miss him even though it's been a long time since the both of us communicated.

I met Martin through an online forum and we both shared our same interests in meteorology, which defined our friendship. He was one of those friends who's willing to drop everything just to be there with you when you're down. I also admired how enthusiastic he was with meteorology and how he always wanted to pursue a career in that field. I, as well as many other friends supported him for it. I'll definitely miss the friendship we shared, as well as his smile, and his enthusiasm. He will never be forgotten in the meteorological community.

Martin and I were a part of ODU's inaugural TV News Workshop course in 2013; he taught myself so much during that semester we'd spent together. He was truly the best at what he did, so bright and intelligent with the information he was able to add to our course. Rest in Paradise, prayers for God's peace and blessings...

I knew Martin from Shelter Sunday. I would bring fur babies from the Norfolk SPCA and Martin fell in love with every one of them. His heart was so huge - the world has lost an angel.

Martin's family and ours were neighbors, so I met Martin and his parents when he was a little boy. His dad and I used to wait on the same corner every day for our kids to get out of school. Martin was very much loved! He and my daughter competed together on the YMCA swim team, and both my daughters took piano from the same teacher, Vivian Young, and shared the same stage at recital time for many years. Martin was a sweet, shy boy and very kind and very smart. It is so hard to believe he has left us. My deepest sympathies go out to Mary and all who loved Martin. He will always have a place in our hearts.

I used to talk to Martin a lot back in the day. As time went on, he got an amazing job doing something that is completely up his alley. It's upsetting to hear the news, and I am giving my condolences to his family, friends, and former co-workers. He will be greatly missed by many.

I met Martin less than 2 weeks ago at the NWA Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City. I only spent a brief time with him but he appeared full of energy and character and had a very bright future ahead of him. I also knew him well in the weather community on social media. It is just painful to write here knowing he is gone so young and so suddenly. It breaks my heart knowing all his ability cannot be shared anymore and that he is gone so soon. I know God is looking out for all of us, and hang in there Mary during these tough times. We're praying for all of you. We will always miss you, Martin.

I truly enjoyed working with Martin, or simply having him in the same room. We would often race outside after sunset to spot a meteor shower or a lunar event. On our last trip, we didn't find anything in the sky, but we promised to catch the next big event.

I called Martin my Quincy Jones of producing and editing news copy for the Internet. Like Jones, Martin could take an author's words and turn them into works of art.

We shared coffee, loose change to spend in the vending machine, and he was always willing to help the older folks in the newsroom understand how to maximize new media.

When I look to the heavens I think of Martin.

I was heartbroken to hear this. I have so many memories of Martin: showing up at 12 years old to volunteer for Garden of Lights (that's the first time I met him); his big smile walking into my office to say hello; putting him on a radio at 13 or 14 -- the first young volunteer to be assigned a radio. Nights he was at the Lights I didn't worry, he handled so many things so well. And he was so smart and fun. I watched him switch SIM cards between his phones depending on his mood, it seemed. He taught me a lot about many things.

When all the weather forecasters were in disagreement about snow or hurricanes, it was Martin I looked to for the right prediction. I disagreed with him once about a snow storm, and the next day found out how wrong I was. After that, he was my go-to guy for weather predictions.

I would see the back of his head on TV or the pictures he posted from the station set and be happy and proud to know him.

One slow night at the Lights, we played "dueling phones," comparing answers between Siri and the Android. "What is the meaning of life?" was just one of the answers. We didn't get a good answer out of either of them.

I am so glad I got to know him for so long. I just wish with all my heart that it could have been so much longer.

My heart is broken for Martin and his great family. I am so sorry.

I met Martin at the AMS Annual Meeting in Austin, TX in January 2013. Did not take long for us to become good friends. Enjoyed meeting up with him at multiple weather conferences and a couple storm chasing trips. Few people could match his passion for broadcast meteorology and it's a tragedy that he didn't have more time to contribute to the field. One of the best. I only have good memories of Martin and only nice things to say. I just wish I could have spent more time with him. A bright light has been extinguished all too soon, but he touched many in his short time here and will not be forgotten. Rest easy my friend. Looking forward to chasing storms with you again some day.
