Portsmouth - On Thursday, December 26, 2013, Agnes Henderson Johnson departed this life after a long illness. She was born January 3, 1935 to the late David and Cora Henderson. After graduating from I.C. Norcom High School she received her B.S. and master degrees from Virginia State University and Columbia University respectively.
Agnes taught Kindergarten and elementary education in the Newport News school system for 34 years. After retirement in 1991 she became the area Coordinator for Headstart/Stop Organization until her second retirement in 1997.
She has been a faithful member of New Bethel Baptist Church, a charter member of the Portsmouth Chapter of the Delicados and the Pinners Point Reunion and a loyal supporter of the Tidewater Areas Orchestra and Ranelli Productions.
Predeceased by her husband Willie "Red" Johnson and infant son Wayne and six siblings, Agnes will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Crystal and Felippe Holiday, her grandchildren, Jared and Madison, her sister, Christine Elliott, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral will be held Friday, January 3, 2014 11 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church by Bishop J.M. Whitaker, 4212 Greenwood Drive. Portsmouth, VA. The burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, Va. The body will be in church at 10 a.m. The family will assemble at the residence.
