Arthur G. Meginley Jr.
Portsmouth - Arthur Meginley passed away June 25 2013 in Pittsburgh, PA where he was undergoing surgery as part of treatment for esophageal cancer. A lifelong resident of Portsmouth, he was the son of Arthur Garrett "Ike" Meginley and Dorothy Pugh Meginley
He is survived by wife Beverly Morelli Kiernan; daughter Elizabeth Leigh Hudson and spouse, Garry; granddaughters Tiffany Hudson and Krystal Perkins, great granddaughters Kensleigh Slade and Emery Perkins and his three dog children, Fairway, Spikey and Lola .
Arthur graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School where he lettered in football and basketball. He graduated from Richmond Polytechnic Institute of William and Mary and played basketball for the Green Devils. Arthur was also proud to have participated in one of the earlier Portsmouth Invitational basketball tournaments.
Upon graduation, he taught and coached at Churchland High School and then sold pharmaceuticals for several years. He spent the next 28 years of his career in the Redevelopment and Housing Industry, working in Portsmouth in the late 60's where he was involved in many significant changes in downtown Portsmouth. He left Portsmouth as Acting Director of PHRA to become Director of the Chesapeake Housing Authority in the late 70's where he served until retirement in 1989. Upon retirement, he was honored as "Life Member" of SERC, Southeastern Redevelopment Council of NARO, National Association of Redevelopment Organizations, for his many contributions to his professional organization during his membership.
An avid golfer and member of Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club for over 50 years, he served on the EMGC C board of directors numerous times and chaired the board during three different terms. For his service and many contributions to EMGCC, he recently received the award for Honorary Membership. He was also a member of the Heritage Palms Golf and Country Club in Ft Myers, Fla where he owned a winter home and he served on the board of his condominium there. During his golfing career, he had five holes in one, organized the daily Meginley golf blitz and was always involved in club events.
Arthur made friendships with people from many walks of life and his friendship was always empowering and sustaining to those who knew him. A lifelong resident of Portsmouth, he remained friends with many childhood friends but, as well, he dearly loved meeting and making new friends whether it was in Ft Myers or in Pittsburgh. Arthur was larger than life and he lived that life with great zeal, no apologies, and no regrets, bringing many smiles to those who knew him thru the years. His sweet nature, natural charm and great sense of humor will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held 3 P.M. Sunday, June 30, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. A reception will follow at Elizabeth Manor Golf & Country Club located at One Ace Parker Dr. in Portsmouth. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 5 - 7 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Portsmouth Humane Society 4022 Seaboard Ct.
