Avis Hundley Obituary

Avis Hundley PORTSMOUTH - Margaret Avis Hundley, 96, passed away peacefully Dec. 7, 2010. She was born April 15, 1914 and lived in Portsmouth all but the first few years of her life. Mrs. Hundley was predeceased by her mother, Margaret S. Gurley; her stepfather, James Gurley; her first husband, Charles Morgan Stanton; and her second husband, John Bowden Hundley. She was an active member of Court Street Baptist Church for more than 75 years and was a member of the Ruth Bible Class. She was also a member of the Portsmouth Executive Club. She is survived by a son, Robert M. Stanton and his wife Eleanor Tyler Stanton; a granddaughter, Allison Stanton McDuffie and her husband U.S. Navy Capt. David "Duff" McDuffie; a great- granddaughter, Frances Meredith McDuffie, a great- grandson, Stanton Michael McDuffie; a sister, Mavia Hudgins; a niece, Suzanne Hudgins Noles and her husband John Lester Noles; and two grand-nieces, Anna and Kristin Wright. The family wishes to thank the outstanding staff at Province Place of Maryview and her team of caregivers for their effective and compassionate care of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 9, at Court Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. L. Wilbur Kersey. A reception will follow in the church social hall. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Court Street Church Endowment Fund, 447 Court St., Portsmouth, VA 23704. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.
