Bessie Steward Obituary

Bessie M. Steward VIRGINIA BEACH - Bessie M. Steward, 89, of the 400 block of Malibu Drive, passed away Sept. 28, 2010 at her home. She was born Nov. 6, 1920 to the late Bessie and Rich Morgan in Rockingham, N.C. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Steward; and brothers, Crawford, James and Glenwood. She received her associates degree in education from the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College and her BS in education from Virginia State College. She was a member of Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church. She retired after 26 ½ years of service from Norfolk Public Schools as a school teacher. She is survived by a daughter, Marian S. Briley; a son, Alfred R. Steward (Vanessa); one brother, Jesse Morgan; eight grandchildren, Aaron S. DeBoise (Chieko), Marian D. Steward, Curtis C. Steward Sr. (Sandra), Benita A. Noriss (Rick), Alfred R. Steward Jr. (Kimberly), Alfred R. Speller Sr. (Melanie), Anita Anderson and Michael Wear (Kyanne); 11 great-grandchildren, Jessie Norris, Angelina M. Steward, Curtis C. Steward Jr., Alfred Speller Jr., Andre Wear, Dominic Wear, Adrienne Speller, Miguelle Hawkins Sr., Alfred R. Steward III, Victoria Steward and Natasha Norris; great-great-grandchild, Madison Manning; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Ave. Chapel. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the chapel. Watch services live online at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.

YOU MAY NOT REMEMBER ME BUT I REMEMBER MS BESSIE AND ALWAYS WILL. WE GREW UP RIGHT BESIDE HER AND WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HER WIT AND ALL THE TIMES WE WENT AND HELPED HER GET HER CLASSROOM READY FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR. BACK THEN PEOPLE JUST STARED AT US, THESE LITTLE WHITE GIRLS HELPING THE BLACK TEACHER IN THE BLACK SCHOOL. BUT WE DIDN'T CARE,WE WERE JUST HELPING MRS. STEWARD.
