Carl Newbern Obituary

Carl G. Newbern CHESAPEAKE - Carl G. "Dugie" Newbern, 81, of the 100 block of Lenwil Drive, passed away April 17, 2010 in his home. A native of South Norfolk, he was the son of the late Thomas and Bertha Newbern. He was a manager with the United States Postal Service. Dugie was a member of Chesapeake Avenue United Methodist Church, South Norfolk Masonic Lodge No. 339 AF&AM, and Khedive Shrine Temple where he served as Potentate in 2008. He was a charter member and past president in 1968 of the Chesapeake Shrine Club and belonged to the Khedive Autos and was a former member of the Khedive Clown Unit. He was also a member of South Norfolk Ruritan Club where he was a charter member and past president and co-founder of the Great American Food Feast, past national president of the Circus Saints and Sinners of America and founding member of the Ringmasters Tent in Chesapeake. He was commissioner of the Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority for many years and was instrumental in bringing many new redevelopment projects to Chesapeake. Dugie was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Williams Newbern. He is survived by his wife, Patricia B. Newbern. When Dugie married Pat they created a family consisting of five children, Lynn Newbern Morris and husband Mark of Stephentown, N.Y., Kay Newbern Sessor of Chesapeake, Todd Smith of Virginia Beach, Wende Pritchard and husband Eric of Kitty Hawk, N.C., and Michelle Martinez and husband Robert of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Tess Powell of Virginia Beach, Lucrethia Henry and Vernell Henderson, both of Chesapeake and Sandra Hales of Colington Harbour, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Logan McErlean, Riley Martinez, Reece Pritchard and Adam Pritchard. He was predeceased by a sister, Neva Curling. A funeral with Masonic rites will be conducted Tuesday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at The Khedive Shrine Center, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, with the Rev. E. Clifton Whitlock and the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood officiating. The burial will follow in Riverside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
