Carl Ward Obituary

Carl Bromsey Ward III NORFOLK - Carl Bromsey Ward III, 65, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Oct. 22, 2010 with his family by his side. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Karen; a daughter Kimberly (Scott Burnette); a son, Carl B. Ward IV (Wendy); grandson, Brody; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Shurtz Porter (Beacher); brothers, Bubba and Wayne; niece, Jessica; and former wife, Alice Ward. Carl was born Oct. 7, 1945 to Veronica and Carl Ward Jr. who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his sister, Patricia and grandson Coley. A proud Holy Trinity, Norfolk Catholic, Ocean View boy, Carl excelled in academics, athletics and making friends. Bromsey became a member of the Pika fraternity and graduated from ODU in 1967. In 1978 he graduated from George Mason Law School while working full time. He made Law Review his third year and passed the Virginia State Bar on his first attempt. In 1967 he was hired as an intern with the Dept. of Navy. In 1971 he accepted a promotion in Washington, D.C., and was promoted to GS-13 level as one of the youngest GS-13s in the Navy. He continued his career with the Dept. of Justice and moved to NOAA as personnel director in 1984 where he stayed until his retirement in 2001. Carl will be most remembered as a fierce competitor on the golf course, a devoted friend and a man who loved his wife, children and grandchildren more than life itself. A verse from his favorite Jimmy Buffett song says it all: "Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way." A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church by Father Daniel Klem. A Christian wake service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at his church. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund, 520 Graydon Ave., Norfolk, VA 23507. Online condolences may be offered to the family through hdoliver.com.

Karen, I was deeply saddened to hear of Carl's passing. I did not see the obituary in the paper, and sorry I missed the funeral. I was at the Broad Bay Golf Club when someone told me. That was where I saw him occasionly during the last few years. I will miss him. We shared some good times together while members of the International Personel Management Association. He was a good friend and fun to be around. My wife Karen and I will have you in our prayers in the days to come.

To Karen as well as all of Carls family and friends grieving his loss at this time ...
I consider myself lucky to have gotten to know Carl in the recent past. He was a good and true friend of my fathers for many, many years who impressed me greatly with his compassion and caring when my Dad needed it most.

On our visits, Carl often spoke of his wife and family. I'm sure was equally proud to be a Grandfather.

So long for now Carl. You will be missed greatly by those you've had to leave behind. I pray that you're now able to get back to a good round of golf.

We are sorry to hear that another Ward has followed so many to the next level of life, because we would have loved to had him spend more of his precious life amongst the living. I hope and pray that his memory lives in the hearts of all his loved ones, as he will be dearly missed. Even though I was not as close as I would have wished, I still feel a vacancy in my heart.

Karen

I wanted to write and tell you how sorry I am for your loss. There are never the right words to express how deeply sad I am that you have to endure your loss. Carl will be truly missed by everyone who knew him no matter where they crossed his path in life.
Carl was a giver, never a taker. He was always there to help no matter how busy he was; no matter the time of day; and, never asking or needing anything in return.
Friends like Carl are few in life and it is with a heavy heart that I also grieve with your loss.
His friendship meant the world to me, and I couldn't have asked for a more genuine friend than Carl. Memories of our times together regardless of where we where or what we were doing will be forever held dear to me. May your memories bring you comfort in the days ahead.

This is such a shock. I had no idea he was ill. A great loss. Carl and I would talk about our younger days since we both grew up in the same area of town. I am so sorry to hear this news.
