Carol Kaliher Obituary

Carol J. Kaliher VIRGINIA BEACH - Carol J. Kaliher, nee Brubaker, 75, passed into life eternal July 8, 2010 at Sentara Leigh Hospital of common bile duct cancer. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 54 years, Vernon "Jiggs" Kaliher; two daughters, Kitty Reip of Burke, Va., and Kristi Hollerud of Independence, Mo.; two sons-in-law, David Reip and Steven Hollerud; and five grandchildren, Allison Reip Xanthopoulos of Fredericksburg, Va., Megan Twait of Overland Park, Kan., Daniel Reip of Burke and Brianna and Sean Challis of Independence; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents and a daughter, Kandi Kaliher; and her brother, Robert Brubaker. Born in Springfield, Ill., March 4, 1935 to Milton and Caledonia Brubaker, Carol graduated from Springfield High School and Illinois State University. She was a special education teacher. She sacrificed her career to move with Jiggs and daughters to 10 locations - four overseas - before settling in Virginia Beach in 1980. Her deep spiritual faith was exhibited in her many church-related activities including the choir. Friendship class members were always challenged by her insight. Her many hobbies included genealogy, scrapbooking for grandchildren, knitting and making many new mothers happy with handmade baby blankets. She was a model wife, mother and grandmother, forever subordinating her desires to other's wishes. A constant smile, effusive personality and a trusted friend, Carol's many character traits were emulated and admired. She was truly a beautiful woman inside and out. A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, Aug. 1, at 4 p.m. at Community United Methodist Church, 1072 Old Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23464, where she was a 30-year member of United Methodist Women. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to United Methodist Committee on Relief through the church (CUMC/UMCOR) or Lee's Friends: Helping People Live with Cancer, 7400 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23505. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family, online condolences may be expressed at www.cremate. org.

Kristi and Megan (and family)-
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. It's interesting to hear about your mother--I never knew that she was a Special Ed teacher. She had to have a compassionate, loving heart to work with her special students. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Jiggs, Kitty & Kristi,
Brent and I want to offer our thoughts and prayers to you all at this sad time. I have many fond memories of Carol/your Mom. I will always remember my Mom telling me the story of how your Mom saved newspapers. She was always going to read them! I have several recipes that your Mom shared with my Mom that I now have and use. I always loved to open the mail when your Mom sent something to me. You never knew what it would be written on but it always had meaning to what it was. I loved the pictures she would send me. Gosh the memories are wonderful. I will always remember Carol/your Mom wonderful smile. She is now in a wonderful place. I know she is spending time with Kandi, your grandmother (Auntie Cal) and my Mom now. They are all looking down on us and smiling. God bless you all.
