Diane was born in Portsmouth Virginia on January 6, 1941 to Leroy Pratt and Cecelia Weatherford Pratt. Diane grew up in the Norfolk area and was a member of Granby High School's Class of 1959. After graduation, Diane began working for AT&T as a long distance operator. In 1962, she transferred to AT&T's Salt Lake City, Utah Office to permit her to be with and assist her grandmother Pratt. It was while she was in Salt Lake City, that she met her future husband, David Gray, who was home on summer leave from the United States Naval Academy. Diane and David were married in Norfolk, Virginia on June 6, 1964 after David's graduation from the academy. As a Navy wife, Diane lived primarily in Virginia, but also made her home in Rhode Island, California, and Hawaii.
Diane had four children and was a full time homemaker. Outside the home she was deeply involved serving in various teaching and leadership roles in her church's young women's programs. She balanced her work with young women by finding time to serve as a Cub Scout Den Leader and as a Boy Scout Unit Commissioner.
Diane was preceded in death by her son Brian David. She is survived by her husband and her remaining children Sheri Doran, Heather (Whitney) Kemmey, and Amy (Joseph) Johansen; her two sisters Barbara (Bud) Fueston and Pat (Jere) Snyder; and her brother David Leroy Pratt. She has 13 grandchildren.
