Charles Anderson Obituary

Charles W. Anderson NORFOLK - Dr. Charles W. Anderson, 86, died at Parsons Residential Care in Chesapeake Monday, Dec. 27, 2010 from complications of emphysema. Born and raised in Norfolk he was the only son of the late James W. Anderson, M.D. and his wife Alma. Charlie graduated from Maury High School in 1942. He attended Virginia Military Institute and joined the Army in 1943 in a medical program. He did intensive pre-med work at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1944 he began his medical studies at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and graduated in 1948, specializing in dermatology. He interned at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and the Barnard Skin Clinic in St. Louis. With the outbreak of the Korean War he was recalled to active duty and served in Germany with the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Upon his discharge in 1953 he joined his father's practice in the old Medical Arts Building in Norfolk. Charlie was a member of the faculty at the Medical College of Virginia, an assistant medical examiner, a highly esteemed staff physician with the Norfolk Public Health Center and belonged to several professional medical associations. He was a past president of the Norfolk Rotary Club and the Norfolk Torch Club. He was also an original member of the Mallory Country Club in West Ghent and enjoyed the camaraderie of many of his fellow members. Charlie had a great love for books and learning that was passed on to his sons, for which they are eternally grateful. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia; two sons, James William Anderson and his wife Bonnie of Chesapeake, Patric Arthur Cumstie Anderson and his wife Isabel of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Ian Anderson and his wife Ayako of Okinawa, Cary Anderson, and Megan Grace Anderson; and one great-granddaughter, Mina Anderson. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. in Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk. The Rev. Dr. Stephen Jolly, pastor, will officiate. A private burial will be held at a later date. Riddick Funeral Service is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association or to Virginia Military Institute.

Dear Jim and others,
I am thinking of you and praying that your happy memories and your faith in God's eternal mercy comfort you and fill your hearts and minds with sweetness to make your grief more tolerable. Grief must have its season, but knowing God is LOVE and his plan for our reunion with our loved ones makes separation less painful.

Love forever,
Aunt Sybil

Jim, Bonnie, Cary and family, our heart felt prayers are with you all at this time. We are sad for you all, but you know he is at peace now. I think one of the greatest legacies a person can leave behind are the people you helped to create and shape in this world, and given that belief and what I know of Dr. Anderson through his son (James Anderson “Jim”) and Jim’s wife Bonnie (my dear friend), I can only conclude how wonderful and noble a man like Dr. Anderson actually was. Our condolences to the family as they mourn his passing, but our best wishes and respect as they celebrate the life of this great man. God Bless and peace be with you all.
The Livernois Family (Paula, Craig, Jenna and Christopher)
