Charles Baines Sr. SAVANNAH, Ga. - Charles Wendell Baines Sr., 81, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 1, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Charlene Baines. He was born in Suffolk, and has resided in Savannah since 1967. Charles served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Following the war, he went to work for the C & O Railroad in Newport News and later was employed as a conductor with the CSX Railroad and retired after 36 years of service. He was a communicant of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Richmond Hill for the past 28 years, a 4th degree Knights of Columbus, member of American Legion, Post 184, and active in the CSX retirees group. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lourdes G. Baines; a son, Charles Wendell Baines Jr. of Savannah; a daughter, Lisa Baines Rudolph (William) of Madeira Beach, Fla.; a granddaughter, Candice Lynn Crosby; a grandson, Ryan Wendell Baines; a sister, Dorothy Daughtry (Raymond); several nieces and nephews. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial is at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Richmond Hill with Fr. Joseph Smith officiating. Mr. Baines will be taken to the church to lie in repose from noon to 1 p.m. There will be a small reception in the church social hall immediately following the Mass. A funeral procession will leave the church at 3 p.m. for a committal service at the Catholic Cemetery on Wheaton Street in Savannah. Memorial contribution in Charles Baines name may be made to St. Ann's Catholic Church or Hospice Savannah Inc.
