Kill Devil Hills - Charles W. Miller, 83, a resident of Kill Devil Hills, NC and formerly of Norfolk, Va, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 24, 2013.
Bill or Charlie aka "Floogie," was born in 1929 in Hot Springs, Va. He lived in a farming environment until moving to Norfolk and joining the Coast Guard where he served for 3+ years. After leaving the service, he returned to Norfolk where he joined the Norfolk Fire Department and became a fireman, rising to the rank of Captain (and at the time the youngest Captain in the NFD). During this time he coached football, played softball and golf, was renowned as a hunter and fisherman, and was generally referred to by his son, daughter, nephews, and nieces as our local version of John Wayne!
After suffering life-threatening injuries while heroically fighting a fire on Church Street in Norfolk, Bill moved to his home on the Outer Banks with his wife Blanche, where he managed the Avalon Fishing Pier and worked for the Dare County School system driving a school bus for all grades. During his last 25 years, he was beset by numerous physical challenges but remained active.
He is survived by his caring daughter, Mary Miller Thrasher of Carova, NC, her husband, Rusty, grandson Trey Thrasher; son Chip Fraser of Santa Paula, CA, his wife, Pamela; grandson Aaron Fraser of San Francisco, CA, and his wife, Eve, great grandchildren, Julien and Alexandra; grandson Byron Fraser of Hollywood, CA, and great grandson Xavier; his sister, Dreama Reynolds of Newport News, VA, as well as numerous nephews and nieces, and beloved neighbors, Robbie and Debbie Snyder and Cliff and Margo Blakely and friend, Jo Ruth Patterson.
A memorial service for friends and family will be announced in the future. A special thank you to all the caring people involved in this final of life's experiences.
