Claire Callahan Duckett

Virginia Beach - Claire Callahan Duckett died on April 29, 2014. She was born on November 4, 1929 in Bellerose, New York. She was pre-deceased by her father David Thomas Callahan and mother Clara Teresa Callahan, her sister Janet F. Davis, her brothers David F. Callahan and Thomas J. Callahan, as well as her former husband, George J. Duckett.

Those she loved and left behind are her children, Karen McComas and her husband, Stephen; Thomas Randolph Duckett and his wife, Karen Colonna; her grandchildren, Quinn Colonna Duckett and his fiancé, Anjela M. Hodge, and Heath Colonna Duckett; her step-grandchild, Stephen McComas Jr.; and her step-great grandchildren, Stephen McComas III and Haley Jean McComas; her sister, Mary Lou Blander and her husband, William; her sister-in-law, Jeanne Karl; and her 29 nieces, nephews, and cousins.

After graduating from Jamaica High School in Queens, NY, Claire began work in New York City with the Canada Dry Ginger Ale Corp, then The New York Daily News, and later Queens College of the City of New York, Graduate Division. She married George J. Duckett in 1953 and moved to West Sayville, NY. Her husband's work at Grumman Iron Works required the family to move to San Diego, CA, and then to Norfolk, VA. After raising her children she returned to college where she received her Master's degree in education. She was employed by Kelly Services, and then Tidewater Community College, from which she retired as an Assistant Professor in the Counseling Department and the Faculty Advisor to the Returning Women's Network. In her retirement, she indulged in her love of traveling, bird watching, researching her Irish heritage (Erin Go Bragh!) and family genealogy, gardening, and was an avid reader of The New York Times and The New Yorker magazine.

A chapel service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, May 2 at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Memorial donations may be sent to Greyhound Friends of NC, 2908-A Oak Ridge Rd., Oak Ridge, NC, 27310.
