Darlene Atkins Obituary

Darlene Denise Atkins VIRGINIA BEACH - Darlene Denise Atkins, 51, passed away Monday, May 30, 2011. Born in Richmond, Va., to Sadie "Candy" Bergeron and the late James Bergeron, Darlene was a mother, a wife, a daughter, sister and friend. She accomplished everything in her life with an artistic vision. She ran her own insurance company through Farmers. Darlene lost her battle to stage four metastatic breast cancer. She was a pioneer in the cancer world for going outside the normal protocol for new treatments and was able to bring together multiple communities in the cancer field. She touched so many people in her life and was a big support online for "cancer sisters." Her beautiful son, Seth Cheshire, her loving husband, Tim Atkins, her mother, Sadie Bergeron, her brother, Jim Bergeron and wife Kim Bergeron and her kitty Slinky survive Darlene. Darlene will be cremated. There will be a service for family at a later date. There is a huge hole in all of our hearts as we say "goodbye" to our beloved "Dee." In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Breast Cancer Society. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.cremate.org.

Mr. Atkins,
I just learned of Darlene's passing. I want to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. I didn't know her well but I could tell in our brief conversations that she was a very special, very brave and resourceful person.
Please accept my deepest condolences.

I was a client of Darlene’s and found her to be a dear sweet person. I was hoping she would beat that nasty cancer. However, she gave it one hell of a fight. Rest in Peace.

Tim, Seth and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you in this very difficult time in your lives. Darlene was a true friend to me and she helped me tremendously after the loss of my husband. We got to be very close and no matter how she was feeling, she would always ask how I was doing and what was going on in my life. We had a lot of fun redecorating my house and picking new paint colors and what she called "the pillow family". She wanted to make sure I had a nice room where I could relax and think of her when she was no longer here. I will miss her greatly and will miss her honesty and suggestions for so many things that will come up in the future.

To the family, Words cannot express the sadness I feel for the loss of my beloved friend. Darlene was my inspiration in the start up of my Farmers agency. She was my mentor and we were joined at the hip at all Farmers functions. Wherever she was, she took center stage and befriended many people everywhere she went. Most did not know that insurance was only one of her major accomplishments. She was a "jewel" in everthing she did. But most of all she couldn't have been the person she was without the total commitment and support she received from her family. She will be missed in the "cancer world" by all she touched with her blog. She researched all types of cancer and helped many with her findings. The care she received from her Doctors from Boston to UNC, was extraordinary. She extracted the passion and dedication inside of each one and her beloved Dr. Steinberg was her "Chemo-Sabi" (friend) . She was blessed to have the time God allowed her here on Earth, and I am sure that she is redecorating heaven right now. I will miss her for a very long time, and memories of her will never fade. She was my "Hero". With much love to all. God Bless. Susan Harris

Darlene's life may have been short, but her time here on earth has touched and enhanced so many lives. Her intelligence, talent, strength, tenacity, and love for others has touched my life forever. Because of Darlene, there are innumerable lives that she encouraged and helped through her ability to search and share information on leading cancer treatments. I am one of those many.
I will miss her. I believe as we mourn the loss of a true Angel on earth, the Angel's in Heaven are rejoicing!
