Darlene Flores DeVera VIRGINIA BEACH - Darlene Flores DeVera was born in Portsmouth on Oct. 21, 1970 and departed Sept. 15, 2010 and resided in San Francisco. With every breath and every ounce of strength, she inspired us with her battle against leukemia. On Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, Darlene Flores DeVera, 39, passed away peacefully at UCSF Medical Center, surrounded by her loved ones. She embarked on her journey to heaven and was welcomed into God's kingdom. While her years in life were shortened, her abundance of love and joy will endure in those who adored her. Born Oct. 21, 1970, in Portsmouth, Darlene was the daughter of the late Antonio Coquia de Vera. She is survived by her mother, Aurora Flores DeVera of Virginia Beach; her sister, Christine DeVera Quigley and husband Shawn, both of Virginia Beach; her loving partner of six years, Harold Findley of San Francisco; and a nephew she adored, Sheamus Antonio Quigley. She is further survived by her extended relatives in the United States and the Philippines. She was also predeceased by her brother, Michael Flores DeVera. A graduate of Virginia Tech, she continued her economics education with an M.A. from the University of Cincinnati. She worked as an economics instructor at the University of Cincinnati, Miami University, and De Anza College. Darlene was an adventurous spirit and loved to travel. She loved dogs, especially the beloved family bassett hound, "Freckles." She was an avid reader, a wine connoisseur, and a total chocaholic. Since her diagnosis, she showed so much courage and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be missed tremendously by all her friends and family. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, today, Sept. 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. with a wake at 7 p.m. Father Michael Gabler will celebrate the Mass of the Resurrection on Saturday in St. Gregory the Great Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park.
