Dr. Phelps was my favorite professor while I was a student at ECU from 1990-1993. He was a fascinating and passionate lecturer and teacher. I remember him as being kind, caring and understanding. I remember visiting him one semester during his office hours and begging him for extra credit because I was a point away from earning an A in his class and all A’s that semester, to which he obliged! I also remember him during one class defending his personal belief that God did somehow exist despite the arguments of evolution. I appreciated him as being one of the kindest and most engaging professors I ever had in college.

Dr. Phelps was one of my most influential professors during my years at ECU, from 1975-79. He possessed great intelligence, yet was extremely down to earth. He cared very much about his research and his students, and never forgot his own roots in Gates County in Eastern North Carolina. He was an excellent teacher, a kind and thoughtful person, and I've never forgotten him.

Dr. Phelps will be greatly missed. He was my advisor at ECU when I got my BA in Anthropolgy. He retired at the same time I graduated from ECU in 1996. He was a wonderful professor and person. He will be remembered fondly.

I met David in the early 90's through business and we discovered that we were distantly related. From that day on he was wonderful about keeping in touch. I am still learning about all his achievements, he will always have a special place in my heart.
