Edith Baker Obituary

Edith H. Baker KILL DEVIL HILLS - Edith Hendrickson Baker, 85, passed away at her home Dec. 25, 2010. Born Dec. 7, 1925, in Mount Lookout, W.Va., she was the oldest daughter of the late Alexander Hamilton Hendrickson and Emma Jane Shackelford Hendrickson. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, George A. "Jeff" Baker; two older brothers, Alec Jr and Lysle Hendrickson; her younger sister, Jean H. Lipscomb; and a stepdaughter, Katharine "Winkie" Thornton. She is survived by four brothers and their spouses, Bernard and Stella Hendrickson, Judson and Ruby Hendrickson, John and Linda Hendrickson, and William (Bill) and Wanda Hendrickson of West Virginia; and her six children and their spouses, Chris and Jeanette Baker of Phoenix, Ariz., Brian and Patty Baker of Olney, Md., Steve and Jeri Baker of Columbia, Md., Mark and Linda Baker of Brookeville, Md., Betsy and Robby Robinson of Powells Point, N.C., and Tracy and Don Turner of Westminster, Md. She is survived by 12 grandchildren, Ethan and Justin Baker, Kelly, Emily and Matt Baker, Brandon and Colleen Baker, Rachel and Tom Baker, Bonnie Robinson, and Edie Lee and George Turner; and by several stepchildren, Bruce Baker of Pennsylvania, Beverly and Ron Freida of New York and Florida, Virginia "Ginny" and Dale Esse of New York, and Doug Baker of Maryland. "Edie" worked for many years as an executive secretary for Vitro Laboratories in Rockville, Md., before retiring with her husband to the Outer Banks in 1979. She spent her remaining years enjoying the sun and surf, but also worked for local businesses and as a volunteer for the GEM Adult Day Services. She continued learning into her later years, attending College of the Albemarle in Dare County, and was an active member of the Outer Banks chapter of NARFE. She loved all types of music, and one of her greatest pleasures was hearing her children singing together while playing their guitars, dobros, and bagpipes. Her wish was to be cremated, and Gallop Funeral Services in Nags Head, N.C., is assisting the family with the arrangements. A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate the wonderful sister, mother, grandmother and friend she was to all who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in her memory to any of the following organizations, or to a charitable organization of your choice: Interfaith Community Outreach, The American Cancer Society, GEM Adult Day Services, Hosea House, Food for Thought, and the Dare County Library in Kill Devil Hills. "The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep."- Robert Frost. Condolences to the family may be expressed via the on-line register at www.gallopfuneralservices.com.
