Edward Goodwin

Edward H. Goodwin CHARLOTTESVILLE - Edward Howard Goodwin died June 27, 2010. He was born in Rochester, N.Y. on May 23, 1919, the son of Ethel Howard and William Archer Rutherfoord Goodwin. In 1923, he moved with his family to Williamsburg, Va. He attended The Episcopal High School and the University of Virginia, where he played football and graduated in 1942. He was married in 1942 to Alice Barraud Cocke. During World War II, Mr. Goodwin spent three years in the Army Air Corps as a pilot flying B-24 bombers. After the war he spent 36 years in the sales department of The Bethlehem Steel Corporation, during which time he worked in Virginia, Philadelphia and New York City. In 1982 he took early retirement from Bethlehem Steel. In 1987 he moved from New York City to Charlottesville. His club memberships included The Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey, various clubs in Philadelphia and New York City, and the Farmington Country Club. Mr. Goodwin is survived by his wife of 68 years; sons, Edward Howard Goodwin Jr. (Ellen) and William Archer Rutherfoord Goodwin III (Emily); daughter, Breckinridge Goodwin Longstreth (William); five grandsons; three granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at the University of Virginia Chapel on the corner of University Avenue and McCormick Road in Charlottesville. There will be a reception following the service at Farmington Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that remembrances be sent to The Episcopal High School, 1200 North Quaker Lane, Alexandria, VA 22302.
