Edward Mason Obituary

Edward Edsel Mason CHESAPEAKE - Edward Edsel Mason, 88, of Rutledge Road, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2010 in his home surrounded by family. Born in Wake County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Nerious Royal Mason and Lillie Macon Mason. He was predeceased by an infant son, a daughter-in-law, Sally Crockett Mason; siblings, Lerlon "Jack" Mason, Derwood Mason, Edna Jefferys, Jessie "Dee" Mason, Mildred Gray, Ellen Beaver and Doris Carter. Edsel was co-owner with his brother "Dee" of Five Points Garage, Norview and Mason Motor Co., Chesapeake. He was involved in stock car racing, mechanical repair, sales, towing, salvage and most anything automotive. He was a member of Clyde's Chapel Baptist Church and attended DeBaun Memorial Baptist. He was brought up as a Mason in the Berkley Lodge No. 167 A.F. & A.M., Norfolk and was later a charter member of the Norview Masonic Lodge No. 113, A.F. & A.M. He was in the Scottish Rite Bodies of the Khedive Shrine Temple. After an early retirement from business ownership, Edsel worked for Betterton and Whitlow and the City of Chesapeake Garage where he later retired. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 66 years, Margie Lee Hocutt Mason; two sons, William Edward Mason and wife Jama, Gary E. Mason; a daughter, Donna Leigh Mason Sykes and husband Howard; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one on the way; a brother, Joseph Talmage Mason as well as numerous nieces, nephews and large extended family. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Chuck Mann will officiate. The interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The viewing will begin today with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to DeBaun Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society.
