Essie Halsey Obituary

Essie M. Halsey NORFOLK - Essie M. "Sassie" Halsey, 96, of the 800 block of West 42nd St., passed Oct. 3, 2010. A native of Hickory, Va., she later moved to Norfolk where she remained until her death. She worked as a domestic worker until she retired in 1976. Mother Halsey served as a devoted member of the New St. James Holiness Church of Christ Disciples for many years faithfully serving as a member of the No. 1 Choir, the Missionary Board, mother of the church, and president of the Helping Hands. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Clara Gilliam; husband, Lloyd S. Halsey Sr.; daughter, Ethel M. Thompson; and son, James L. Halsey. Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Lloyd S. Halsey Jr. (Ann) of New York and Donald R. Halsey (Janet) of Norfolk; two sisters, Pastor Martha O. Williams (Steve) and Daisy Givens of Washington, D.C.; daughter-in-law, Delzola Halsey; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church Lambert's Point, where she may be viewed at 10 a.m. Viewing will be held in Pretlow & Sons Funeral Home today from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. A wake will also be held in New St. James Holiness Church of Christ Disciples from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Just wanted you all to know that I am thinking of you. I didn't get the funeral information until it was too late. I know that the Angels in Heaven were Happy the Day Miss Essie came through the Gates.I feel Blessed that I got to know her and her wonderful family. She touched my life and everyone that met her. MOTHER HALSEY WAS A PILLAR OF FAITH FOR ALL WHO KNEW HER AT ST JAMES HOLINESS CHURCH. SHE WORKED HARD TO SPREAD GOD'S WORD. SHE ALSO HELP SAVE SOUL'S EACH AND EVERY SUNDAY AT ST JAMES. DON WE WILL MISS MOTHER HALSEY SHE WAS TRULY THE LIGHT JESUS SENT FOR US TO FOLLOW ON EARTH. MAY GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY IN YOUR TIME OF LOSS.

This is the day the Lord has made, we shall rejoice and be glad in it.
