Ethel Daniel Pettway
Waverly - Ethel Daniel Pettway, 92, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 20, 2012 at Lake Prince Woods. Born June 22, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William E. Daniel and Rosela Weaver Daniel. She was the wife of the late Edward F. "Sonny" Pettway, Jr. A 1938 graduate of Waverly High School, Ethel was a retired switchboard operator for C & P Telephone Co. (Verizon), a member of the C & P Telephone Company Pioneers Club, a member of the Waverly Congregational Christian Church and one of the original members of the Rusty Needles Club. In addition to handwork, Ethel loved flowers and gardening. A lifelong resident of the Town of Waverly, Ethel moved to Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk in 2004.
Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth Drewry and her husband, Emmett of Waverly, two sons, Herbert W. Pettway and his wife Cheryl of Virginia Beach, and Edward F. "Frank" Pettway III and his wife, Roberta of Stuart; grandchildren, E.T. Drewry, Jr. and his wife Betsy, Ashley Pettway and his wife, Jennifer, Elizabeth Pettway and Nathan Pettway; two great-grandsons, Tanner Drewry and Braeden Pettway; step-grandchildren, Damion Richardson, his wife Kara and children, Aiden and Abram, and Brooke Joyce and her husband, Mike and children, Landon, Ella and Eli; a sister-in-law, Marie D. McEnerney of Newport News; a brother, William E. Daniel, Jr. of Prince George; a sister-in-law Lois Pettway of Petersburg; and a brother-in-law, Clarence Clements of Prince George. She was predeceased by a grandson, William Daniel Drewry; a brother, Graham Daniel and a sister, Martha D. Clements.
A celebration of Ethel's life will be held at Wakefield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. "Chuck" Willman officiating on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Waverly Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly Congregational Christian Church, General Fund, P.O. Box 636, Waverly, VA 23890 or Compassionate Care Hospice, 4425 Portsmouth Blvd., St. #110, Chesapeake, VA 23321. Condolences may be posted at www.jtmorriss.com.
