Gay B. O'Neal Jr.

Virginia Beach - BMC Gay B. O'Neal, Jr. USN (retired), 88, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Born in Waverly, VA, on April 19, 1926, he was a resident of Virginia Beach, VA for more than 50 years. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years, serving in Korea and two tours in Vietnam on gun boats. He received many prestigious awards and medals during his naval career, including the Purple Heart. He was also retired from Portsmouth General Hospital after 20 years of dedicated service there.

Leaving behind to carry-on his memory is his loving wife of 60 years, Maria C. O'Neal, a son, David B. O'Neal (Michelle) and four daughters, Olinda L. Winters (Roby), Gayle E.M. O'Neal (Larry), Shirley A. Boynton (Michael) and Pamela J. Minnich, nine grandchildren (Roby Winters, Jr., David W. Winters, Travis J. O'Neal, Kenneth G. Elmore, Maria L. Phillips, Steven D. Minnich, II, Adam A. Minnich, Amanda L. Minnich and Jeffrey A. Case), six great-grandchildren and his extended family of nieces, nephews and family friends.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday, April 28, at 1 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Laskin Road Chapel by Reverend Jane A. Davis. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 4pm to 6pm at the funeral home.
