George Arthur Knauer Obituary
George Arthur Knauer
Virginia Beach -
George Arthur Knauer May 4, 1922 - April 4, 2013

Art Knauer left this world to join his beloved wife Mary and daughter Linda in heaven on April 4, 2013. His passing was peaceful, and at 90, who would want more? He is also pre-deceased by his siblings and his daughter-in-law Mary Anne Knauer. He leaves behind his 3 children and 6 grandchildren: Vivian Bengel, husband Kevin, children Geoffrey and Stephen; Patricia Brinkley, husband Rob, child Brenner; James Knauer, children Matthew, Lauren and Christen; and honorary daughter and friend, Barbara Moore. He was dearly loved by many and his humor and wisdom will be profoundly missed.
Art had quite a life. He served in WWII in the Marine Corps. After graduating from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Philadelphia, PA) in 1952 he pastored Noank Baptist Church (Noank, CT) before enlisting in the Chaplain's Corp of the US Navy in 1955. He was a chaplain for 30 years. Re-entering civilian life, he pastored at Windsor Congregational Christian and Isle of Wight Christian Churches, and later at Pembroke Manor UCC (Va. Beach, VA) before retiring in 1993. Art was also a member of the Rotary Club of Cape Henry.
A celebration of his life will be held April 20th at 2 p.m. at Pembroke Manor UCC (corner of Independence and Constitution Avenues), Va. Beach, Va. Reverend Steve Smith will preside with Reverend Randy Orwig, current senior pastor at Elon Community Church (NC) and longtime friend, presenting the eulogy. Many friends are contributing to this celebration of Art's life, and his family is very grateful to you all. Art was famous for many quotes, but left us with one that seems appropriate: "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." We all have our own reasons to smile. Donations may be made to Friends of Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center (341 S. Birdneck Road, Virginia Beach 23451) in lieu of flowers.
