George Jeffries Obituary

George Lee Jeffries NORFOLK - George Lee Jeffries peacefully departed this life May 25, 2010. He was born in Norfolk, the youngest of five children by the late Paul and Bertha Jeffries. George was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1937. He was drafted in the Army in 1941 and served with the Tuskegee Airmen as a member of the famed 99th Pursuit Squadron, later 332nd Fighter Group which served in North Africa and Italy during World War II. After being discharged from the Army, George continued his education at A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C. He worked for Railway Mail Service for 30 years from which he retired in 1975. He was an active member of the Philadelphia, Pa., Tuskegee Airman Inc., The Friendly Club, A&T Alumni and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity of Philadelphia. He is survived by his wife, Emma Stone Jeffries; daughter, Verline Jeffries; and son, Gary Jeffries. He was preceded in death by son, George Jeffries Jr. Surviving is a very devoted nephew, George Henry Jeffries. Surviving grandchildren are: Kenya Pettiford, George Jeffries III, and Janaia Jeffries. Surviving great-grandchildren are: Keson Graham and Joelle Jeffries; also surviving are a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Riddick Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements.
