Gerald Lunde

Chesapeake - Gerald "Gerry" Lunde of Chesapeake died Dec. 15, 2013, peacefully at his home with his family present, following a brief illness. He was 87. Gerry was born in Madison, South Dakota and moved to Portsmouth after high school. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corp, which later became the Air Force. He served in the Korean War where he developed his skills with communication technology. After being discharged, he worked for C & P Telephone Co and retired as a central office technician and an original pioneer in the telephone communication business. Gerry then began his second career as artist who mastered water color painting, clay sculpting, and wood carving. He was an active member of the Tidewater Carvers and Whittlers Club and taught carving in the community for many years. Gerry was a member of the Old Farts Chapter of the Float Fisherman of Virginia and a Judge for the Hatteras Angler's Club, during the Fall saltwater fishing tournament. He worked to raise awareness for Scenic River Legislation and was an avid supporter of protecting the environment and wildlife. He was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 255, and the expedition manager to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in 1975. Gerry regularly attended meetings at the VFW, CWA, The Telephone Pioneers, the Portlock Senior Center, the Beazley Community Center, and at Hardees each morning with his many good friends. In addition, he was an active member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janet Eleanor Grimes Lunde; a brother, James Lunde; predeceased by his sister, Helen Braun. His family includes his children, Carl "Danny" Lunde and his wife, "Bobbie", Linda Rader and her husband, Barry, and Evelyn Zirkle and her husband, Keith; grandchildren Scott, Wayne, and Nathan Lunde, Holly and Paul Rader, and Keith and Ty Zirkle, and many great-grandchildren, all of whom, he loved dearly.

Gerry now lives eternally with Jesus. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Lutheran World Action through Holy Communion Lutheran Church.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, 6220 Portsmouth Blvd, Portsmouth, VA. 23701 on Friday, Dec. 20, at 10:30 a.m. with the graveside service afterward at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 3920 Airline Blvd. A reception for family and friends will follow at the United Church of Christ located one block down from Holy Communion Lutheran, at 5900 Portsmouth Blvd. The arrangements are being handled by Foster Funeral Home.
