Gwendolyn J. Cox

Waverly - Gwendolyn Jennings Cox, 82, a life-long resident of Waverly, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon Franklin Jennings and Olive West Jennings; her husband of 57 years, Junius Brownley Cox, Jr. and her brothers, Vernon Franklin "Sonny" Jennings and Lewis Franklin Jennings. At the age of 16, aided by her father, Gwen soloed as a pilot from the Waverly Airport. In her later years, she became an accomplished outdoorswoman and an avid world traveler. Gwen was a graduate of Waverly High School, Class of 1950, a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, majoring in Physical Therapy, Class of 1954, and taught for 20 years in the Sussex County Public School system, and was an active member of Waverly United Methodist Church where she served in numerous capacities.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Brownley Franklin Cox and wife, Tammy, of Waverly and Rexwood Ashby Cox and wife, Susan, of Suffolk; grandchildren, Olivia, Nicholas, Ashley, and Dixie Cox; brother, John Talbot Jennings of Hampton, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 13, 2014 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home Wakefield Chapel, 11414 General Mahone Hwy Wakefield, Virginia 23888 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, July 14, 2014 at Waverly United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Waverly Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583 Waverly, VA 23890, Waverly United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 12 Waverly, VA 23890, or Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S. Crater Rd. Petersburg, VA 23805.
