He was a wonderful character, eccentric and brilliant. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he loved. He was my adviser for one of my research studies and was a wonderful mentor. I learned a lot from him and hope that he rests peacefully.

Dr. Gillen was my favorite professor at ODU, I really enjoyed his classes. Then about 15 years after graduation, I saw him at a collie rescue picnic, he was still the same funny guy. Rest in peace, Dr. Gillen, I'm proud to have known you.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your Family. Barry was one of the original "Boat People" in the Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Safety Class in March of 1988. We sure had a blast, but I knew to keep Barry in front of me if I ever saw him on the water.

He was a true intellect and friend to all.
