Harvey S. Armstrong

Smithfield - Harvey Sawyer Armstrong, 95, died January 4, 2014 at Nansemond Pointe Convalescent Center in Suffolk. Born in Norfolk, he was a son of the late James D. and Ellen Sawyer Armstrong. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Viola Bristow Armstrong of Portsmouth; two sisters, Elizabeth A. Baker of Norfolk and Grace A. Bottomley of Havertown, PA; and a brother, James D. Armstrong, Jr. of Baltimore.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII and saw action with the Fifth Army in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Harvey retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Suffolk and a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Linda Armstrong Bean of Suffolk; granddaughter, Jennifer Bean Kirk, grandson-in-law, David Austin Kirk and three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Alexandra and Emerson, all of Laguna Nigel, CA. The family would like to thank his many caretakers for all their kind, loving care, and give special acknowledgement to Ann, Linda and Dennis for their many kindnesses.

The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 9, at 1 p.m. at Sturtevant Funeral Home, 2690 Bridge Road, Suffolk by the Rev. Carl LeMon with burial in Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com
