Helen Bryant Obituary

Helen C. Bryant HAMPTON - Helen C. Bryant, 87, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010. Born in Watertown, S.D., and raised in La Crosse, Wis., Helen had been a Hampton resident since 1943 when she moved here to work as a draftswoman at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (now NASA). Helen was always very active and took on a variety of leadership roles at her children's schools, various clubs and civic organizations, and her church. Helen will be remembered for her love of life, many lifelong, treasured friendships, and for her many talents - especially as a seamstress extraordinaire. From the time she first arrived in Hampton, the church played an important role in Helen's life. She first attended Central United Methodist Church, where she met her husband Marvin, but Bethany United Methodist Church became her home. She was very active in the church and her many contributions there will live on. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Lee Bryant and her son, Thomas Carl Bryant; survivors include her son, Timothy D. Bryant of Gloucester; her daughter, Carla J. Bryant and her husband Jim Farrington of Hampton; and a grandson, Justin D. Bryant. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, at Bethany United Methodist Church on Todds Lane in Hampton by the Rev. Arthur Rajanayakam. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 1509 Todds Lane, Hampton, VA 23666.

Dear Friends,

I met Helen Bryant at The Chesapeake when visiting my mother, the late Doris Helbig. Helen was a very interesting and caring person, and I am very glad that our paths crossed.

May God bless you all with His peace.

I first met Mrs. Bryant last August while my Grandma was in HC at the Chesapeake recovering from surgery. Mrs. Bryant reached out to me and my family and made a point of getting to know us during this time. She always greeted us with a smile and a big hello and helped us get through many long days. It was a blessing to get to know her - she had an incredible zeal for life. Once my Grandma returned to AL, I would stop by to check in on Mrs. Bryant and last saw her a few weeks ago. I am forever grateful for her kindness and for the opportunity to get to know her.

Carla and Tim,
My sympathy is with you both with the loss of your wonderful mother. I loved her smile and gentle way -- always so pleasant and kind. She even had a little luncheon at her house when we came back to Hampton to visit 10 years ago. She was one of my mother's dearest friends and it is hard to see them both gone. She will always be part of my life, though, as she was for many, many years. It was good to see you both yesterday. I am praying for you....
