Henry E. Allen

1930 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Henry E. Allen
Suffolk - Henry E. Allen, 83, entered Glory on Sunday, July 28, 2013. Affectionately known as "Hank" by friends and "Pop" by family, he was born in Shipman, Virginia on February 7, 1930. Stories abound that he walked five miles to and from school in the snow uphill both ways.
Graduating from high school, Pop entered the United States Air Force during the Korean War conflict. Although he did not see combat, his tour of duty was involuntarily extended one year. Pop then completed an apprenticeship and became one of New Jersey's top tool and die makers. It's believed that he made precision guidance system parts that kept many "Gemini" space missions on track.
Pop married his beloved "Perci" in 1965 and adopted her son, John, as his own. In New Jersey, the Allen household became a Saturday night hangout for his son's friends. Spaghetti night, "brown" cows and "Creature Feature" on television were never routine. Pop coached baseball, told scary stories and talked frequently about his many cars, including his 1964 Pontiac GTO with three deuces, said to have hit 160 miles per hour.
Pop was passionate about the Lord and always served wherever asked. Most recently he was a member of Nansemond River Baptist Church in Suffolk. He will be missed by his son, John and his wife, Rebecca, and their three children, Caleb, Rachel, and Hannah; his sister-in-law, Jean; nephews, Robert and Richard; and niece, Kathy, and their families. His meeting the Lord face-to-face and reunion with his wife, "Perci", dad Herman, mom Henrietta, brother Stan, and sister Betty was something he spoke a lot about recently.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, at 12 Noon in Nansemond River Baptist Church. Burial in Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery will be at 3 PM. The family will greet friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk on Thursday from 7-8 PM. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com
