Herbert Tennyson Arnold
Norfolk - 64, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2013. Hap was born and raised in Norfolk. He was a University of Richmond graduate and member of Kappa Sigma. Between 1974 and 1997, Hap served in the Virginia Air National Guard's 192nd Tactical Fighter Group and 149th Tactical Fighter Squadron retiring with the rank of Major. He flew the F-105, A-7, T-33, and F-16. He proudly represented Virginia in Operation Just Cause - Panama, 1990. As a civilian, he flew for Presidential Airways, Laker Airways, World Airways, and Omni Air International where he flew in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Hap was passionate about everything he did, but he was most passionate about flying, especially low to the ground. Hap's flights took him to the far corners of the globe but he was happiest at his home with his dog Elvis on the Chickahominy. Hap never met a stranger and everyone who knew him described him as a good friend. He was legendary for his stories and adventures. He was incredibly fortunate to have made lifelong friendships with many wonderful people, and he cherished each one.
Hap is survived by his mother, Louise W. Arnold; brother, Richard W. Arnold, Jr. and sister-in-law Nancy; nephew, Jason Arnold and his wife and three sons, Betsy, Tyler, Cameron, and Jake; niece, Ashley Johnson and her husband and two sons, Kevin, Jayden, and Cody; extended family; and close friend, Charlie Rutherford. On Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., there will be a memorial service at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors.
