Herman Charity Obituary

Herman Charity Jr. CHESAPEAKE - In the calm and early morning hours of Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 Herman Charity Jr. departed his earthly existence as peacefully as he lived. He resided in Chesapeake with his wife, Eva Charity. A Norfolk native, Herman was born March 27, 1921, in Lamberts Point. He was the son of the late Herman and Bessie Charity. He was the elder of two children and was preceded in death by his brother, Dawson Charity. Herman was a true family man, a chef connoisseur and fisherman extraordinaire. Herman worked tirelessly to provide for his family working at the Norfolk Naval Air Station as a pipefitter for more than 40 years. He was also a member of New Mount Zion Church of God Holiness. Affectionately known as "the dynamic duo," Herman and Eva were married for 69 years. From this union three children were born, Herman A. Charity, Alfreda O. Charity and Beverly C. Jackson. Known for his quiet manner, yet strong gentle spirit he dedicated his life to providing for others. Herman is survived by his primary caregiver, devoted and loving wife, Eva Charity; a son, Herman A. Charity; two daughters, Alfreda O. Charity and Beverly C. Jackson (Vashon); four grandchildren, Alfred S. Charity (Celeste), Tamara Charity-Brown (Carlos), Bev-Freda L. Jackson and Evmarian J. Cabey (Myron); and nine great-grandchildren in addition to a host of extended family, friends and loved ones. Numerous family members and loved ones sorrowfully will mourn his departure from this earthly residence and miss his wonderful smile. The family will receive friends at 2117 Hollins Court, Chesapeake, VA 23320. The sunrise-sunset service will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at New Mount Zion Church of God Holiness, 1042 Philpotts Road, Norfolk, VA 23513. Keith Matthews Funeral Home is providing professional services. The body will be in the church for a final viewing from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Gardens.

To Herman (my neighbor for 10 years): So sorry to hear about your dad. It's been years since I had seen your parents but I remember your dad's quiet disposition and his big smile. All of us used to have lots of fun and great fellowship/friendship during those days when I also lived on Campbell Avenue. I still cherish all those memories. Death is hard because it's always hard to say goodbye to the ones we love. The love your dad had for all of you is a blessing within itself. I know you are already missing him because I know you all loved him just as much as he loved you. But he will live in your hearts forever because of the wonderful relationship you had with him. Do know that many others are thinking about you and your family and that many of us care. Take care of your Mom and remain close to your family. May God bless all of you.

Mrs. Charity and Family,

Our condolences and love to you and your family during the lost of such a great man. As a neighbor Mr. Charity was a true friend who always offered a kind word and smile. You could always get a lengthly conversation out of the word "Fishing" something we loved to talk about. The memories are great. Keeping you in prayer.

Love You,
Andre', Pat & Lauren Cheatham
