James Daniel Obituary

James R. Daniel NORFOLK - James R. "Jim" Daniel, 78, went to be with the Lord April 23, 2010. He was born Aug. 3, 1931 in Murphy, N.C., to Henderson and Eva Daniel. He is survived by two sons, Christopher L. Daniel of Petersburg, Va., Eric J. Daniel and his wife Jessica Daniel of Norfolk; grandson, Christopher J. Daniel; and family members, Michelle Crutcher, Jerry Crutcher and Gary Crutcher, all from Norfolk. Jim proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later joined and retired from the Norfolk Fire Department in 1985. He was also a member of Bayview Baptist Church in Norfolk. His main hobbies were flying personal aircraft and metal detecting. In 1989, on the beach of Ocean View, he used his underwater metal detector to find a class ring that was lost in the summer of 1927. Instead of keeping or selling the ring, as many treasure hunters would do, he took the time to track down the original owner and returned the class ring. He also enjoyed yard work and spending time with his sons and grandson. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at the Bayview Baptist Church in Norfolk.

Jim was such a dear friend and neighbor for many years. I loved seeing him with his feet propped up on the deck sitting in his chair. He loved all of my dogs and always had time to chat and give them a pat on the head. He even took a picture of my Ashley and brought it to my house. Jim was a kind and gentle soul who was always willing to help you if he could, he will be so missed in the neighborhood. It will be difficult to pass by his house walking my dog and not look over expecting to see him on the porch.
God bless you Jim for your loving kindness to me for so many years.

We are so saddened to learn of Jim's passing...he was a good and faithful friend to my "step-dad" James Whitley, calling and checking on him and my mom Doris and calling ME if he was concerned about their well-being or couldn't reach them. He will be truly missed; our condolences to his family.
God keep you in His care,

Mr "Jim" was not only my neighbor, but a very sweet and hard working man. He made my day, everytime I saw him. My dog Zoey loved this man, as he did her. To this day when we walk by she still tries to get on the porch. Mr "Jim" will be missed but he is in a much better place, he has gone home. Sharon, Chantel and Debbie
