James Lock Obituary

James B. Lock VIRGINIA BEACH - James B. Lock, 66, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born Aug. 11, 1943 in North Carolina, he was a son of the late Dr. Frank and Mary Lock. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Joyce and Amelie and a brother, Frank, with whom he shared many Sunday morning conversations. During his career as a math teacher for Virginia Beach Public Schools, Jim taught many students while at Holland and Green Run Elementary schools, with many students following him as he taught at Princess Anne Middle School. His influence greatly impacted many lives and the responsibility he felt was immense. He loved spending time on Linkhorn Bay "puttering" on his Sea Pro boat and enjoyed playing golf, rain or shine. Surviving are his loving wife, Sandra Griggs Lock; his children, Marcus Lock of Colorado and Emily Lock of Norfolk; five grandchildren; his siblings, David Lock of Beaufort, S.C., and Erline Parnell of Lady Lake, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews with whom he shared a special bond. Jim was our brother-in-law as well as friend. We'll always remember his kindness and his great sense of humor. He was a true Southern Gentleman who treasured his family and friends. There are very few men left that are of his caliber. It was a blessing to know him and he will be missed. May God bless his family.

Dear Sandra, Marc, and Emmy,
David and I are deeply saddened to hear about Jim. I taught math in the room next to Jim's for a year and used to marvel at his infinite sense of humor, even in times when laughing was furthest from the mind. Mr. Lock was my 6th grade math teacher at Green Run elementary school. He is one of the first teachers that I remember as one who made his subject matter interesting and took a genuine interest in his students. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

Jim Lock was an incredible teacher -- one that would keep you engaged, make math your favorite subject and keep you laughing. I was lucky enough to serve as a patrol for him and will never forget his green Karmann Ghia convertible. My condolences to Jim's family. He will be dearly missed.

My deepest condolences to the Lock family. Mr Lock was my sixth grade math teach at Green Run Elementary. He is one of the few teachers that taught you more than just "math" and always took the time to talk with you, not to you. That's tough to do. I'll Always have kind memories of him and will be forever grateful for all the help and guidance he provided over the years. He will be deeply missed by all those he taught, listened to, and helped.

My deepest condolences for the family of such a remarkable man. Mr. Lock was my sixth grade math teacher at Green Run Elementary in 1975. It was a very difficult time in my life having just moved to Virginia after the divorce of my parents. I was a very sad little girl who had the fortunate luck to cross paths with a man like James Lock. He knew I needed a shoulder to lean on and spent lots of extra time talking to me, encouraging me, and making the transition in my life much less painful. For that kindness, I have ALWAYS remembered him as my "favorie teacher".The impact he made in my life was lasting, and he will be deeply missed.
