James Sherrod Obituary

James H. Sherrod SUFFOLK - Elder James H. Sherrod, 86, of the 600 block of Madison Ave., Suffolk, died Thursday, April 22, 2010, at his residence. He was the son of the late James Sherrod and Flossie Barlow/Annie Sherrod. He was also predeceased by his wife, Frances Juanita Copeland Sherrod. Elder Sherrod retired after 42 years as a air condition/ refrigeration mechanic at Planters Peanut Company. He was a World War II veteran. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church where he was the assistant pastor, chairman of the Deacon Board, member of the Mens Fellowship, and Sunday school teacher. He was a prison minister and one of the chaplains at Obici Hospital. He leaves to cherish his memory six daughters, Mary A. Slade (James), Gloria Lassiter (Richard), Mary F. Whitley (William), Thelma Brown, all of Chesapeake, Bernice Dumas (Robert "Bob") of Virginia Beach, and Pastor Miriam S. Copeland (Randolph "Randy") of Suffolk; four sons, Elder Bernell Sherrod (Denise), James Sherrod Jr. (Marion), Samuel L. Sherrod (Linda), all of Suffolk and Prescott Sherrod (Natashcha) of Virginia Beach; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mamie Anthony of Watersbury, Conn; sister-in- law, Gloria Jean Smith of Suffolk; brothers-in-law, Bishop Clearance Copeland (Cora) of Suffolk and William L. Copeland (Gayle) of Reading, Pa.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, in New Mount Joy Food for Living Ministries officiated by Pastor Miriam S. Copeland and Elder Bernell Sherrod. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
