Jane Meredith Obituary

Jane B. Meredith VIRGINIA BEACH - A resident of Virginia Beach since 1937, Jane B. Meredith, 91, passed away at her home Oct. 30, 2010. Jane was predeceased by her one and only true love, Jaquelin M. Meredith; her parents, John Bass and Dorothy Torbert Bass; her sister, Celia Bass Conklin; and her granddaughter, Meredith Hudson. She was born at King's Daughters in Portsmouth Sept. 9, 1919. Jane attended Port Norfolk School and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School as valedictorian. In the 1940s, she was employed by C & P Telephone Company. She and her true love built a home on 25th and Artic where they and their four girls lived until 1958. They then moved into their dream home in Rudee Heights at the south end of the city where Jane became a charter member of their civic league. Additionally, she was a Girl Scout leader, the first president of the Virginia Beach Junior Woman's Club, and a member of the Garden Club. She was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church and served, years ago, as Sunday school superintendent and volunteered in the gift shop. Momma Jane was a lover of nature and animals and devoted her life to their conservation. Her efforts toward this cause included volunteer time with The Cousteau Society, The National Audubon Society, The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, The Nature Conservancy, and the Save Our Sun campaign. She also fought hard for wetland preservation in the Rudee Heights area. She is survived by her children, Marshall Meredith, Sharon White and her husband Bill, Catharine "Cappy" Meredith and her husband Joey and Rebecca Blair and her husband Ray; grandchildren, Shannon Ballinger and husband John, Stacey White, Rachel Blair, Kelli Rooks and husband Dave, Shea Weinbrecht and Wendy Buettner and husband Danny; and great-grandchildren, Jacquelin Ballinger, Kendall Ballinger, Marshall and Cheyenne Hudson and their parents Mark and Dottie, Paige Rooks, and Daniel Buettner. Jane's favorite moments included naps with grand-cat, Boo, feeding time with her adopted Muscovy, Goo, Christmas and birthdays, traveling with her daughter, and time with her family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 at Maestas Chapel, 1801 Baltic Ave. Memorial donations may be made to the Garden of the Pines Pet Cemetery at 2685 Salem Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. Death can sometimes be more a friend than an enemy, more a blessing rather than an affliction, and always more a beginning
rather than an ending. God bless you Jane Meredith.
