Portsmouth - Jerry A. Goldman, 78, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013 in his home surrounded by his devoted family.
He attended Portsmouth Public Schools, was a Corpsman in the Naval Reserves, and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia with a B.S. in Pharmacy. He was the owner and pharmacist in charge of Suburban Pharmacy in Portsmouth until his retirement in 1997 and was a member of the American, Virginia, and Tidewater Pharmaceutical Associations. He was a member of Churchland Baptist Church, where he was an ordained Deacon, served on several committees, and sang in the Chancel Choir for many years.
His life was rich with interests and activities. He was an avid boater and member of the United States Power Squadron. Jerry spent many summers fishing and sailing the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. He also loved the outdoors and camping with his family. In later years, he and wife Jo Ann traveled extensively in their motor home throughout the United States. He loved reading, bicycling, and antique cars. Jerry's life revolved around his much-loved grandchildren and pets, spending his retirement years filling their lives with memories. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Moses E. Goldman and Mary D. Goldman, and brother Edwin E. Goldman.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jo Ann; children Teresa Coble and husband Frank, Mark Goldman and wife Donna, Amy Broughman and husband Wade and Steve Goldman and wife Linda. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren; Melissa White and husband Chris, Adam Broughman, Claire Broughman, Jay Coble, Sarah Goldman, Nathan Goldman, Joseph Goldman, and great grandson Reid White. Also surviving is older brother Larry L. Goldman and wife Elizabeth, sister-in-law Judy Walker and husband James, and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
The family extends their deepest love and appreciation to David Colwell for his care and comfort during these last weeks and to Compassionate Care Hospice for their support and guidance.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013 in Churchland Baptist Church. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m.
