Jerry D. Byars, Sr.

Norfolk - Jerry D. Byars Sr., 79, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend passed away at home surrounded by family and friends on December 27, 2013. He was born in Lockhart, SC and moved to Norfolk in his late teens.

Jerry is survived by his children, Gean McCarter and her husband, Danny; Jerry "Doug" Byars, Jr. and his wife, Jane; Barbara Byars; David Byars and his wife, Debbie; and his precious grandchildren, Stephen, Brittney, Alex, Melody, and Isaac; great grandson Tucker, sister Hope Hill, many nieces and nephews and his best friends Cordie and Janice Glover. He was predeceased and joining in heaven with his wonderful wife and sweetheart of almost 55 years Bettie, his parents, David Douglas and Amma Byars and sisters Helen, Elizabeth (Bud), Ruth, and Grace.

Jerry was a retired IBEW Local 80 electrician. He worked for E.C. Ernest and Huntsman Chemical for many years. Prior to declining health he was an active member of Brentwood Baptist Church and the IBEW retiree club. He loved to build and fix things and travel with family and friends. His love for family and friends were the most important things in his life. He will be greatly missed. Even though he is gone, we will carry him in our hearts forever.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home with fellowship following. He will be laid to rest in a private service at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Jerry requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made in his memory to Brentwood Baptist Church, 8026 Old Ocean View Road, Norfolk, VA 23518 or .
