John Askew Obituary

John W. Askew Jr. GIBBS WOODS - John Walter Askew Jr., 83, of the 400 block of West Gibbs Road, a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather, died Friday, July 9, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Askew was born in Virginia and was the son of the late John Walter Askew Sr. and Ethel Mae Askew. He was predeceased by his first wife, Janie Richardson Askew and a brother, Raymond A. Askew. John was an electrician and retired from civil service. He was a member of Cava Christian Church. John will be missed by those who knew and loved him. Survivors include his wife, Ann Askew; his son, John W. Askew III and wife Anne; three grandchildren, David W. Askew and wife Kiki, Ricky D. Askew, and James "Jimmy" Askew and wife Cheryl; and three great- grandchildren, Benjamin D. Askew and wife Rebecca, Brittany D. Smith and husband Issac and Bailey D. Askew; six stepchildren, Rhonda Mayer and husband Greg, Belinda Arnold, Donna Dean and husband Keith, Katrina Barnes and husband Bob and Rodney Young and wife Cathy and Gary Harrell and wife Vicky; as well as numerous stepgrandchildren and a stepgreat-grandson; as well as a canine companion, Jack Askew. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 12, in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin today with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. At all other times, the family will be at John's home and J.W.'s home. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends. I served with Janie on the Board of Commissioners in Currituck and spent time with John on several occasions. Gibbs Woods and other areas need folks like John who give back to their communities. He was an asset and will be missed.
