John C. Wood, Jr.
Virginia Beach - John Clayton Wood, Jr., age 97, died on Dec. 19, 2011 in Virginia Beach. John was born on May 10, 1914 to Beulah Trafton Wood and John Clayton Wood, Sr. John and his four sisters grew up at Wood's Corner in the Kempsville section of Virginia Beach.
He attended Kempsville Elementary School and the American Institute of Banking. For 2 years John Worked at Seaboard Citizens Bank of Commerce; then later at Lone Star Cement. During WWII he worked at the Marine Base on Hampton Blvd. After the war he worked for I.W. Hardy Dairy Supplies; then later worked for Thomas Wood Hardware.
In 1947 John started his own business, Campostella Electronics. He was instrumental in organizing the Virginia Professional Electronics Assoc. of Tidewater and the State Assoc. He served as president for 2 years at the local assoc., and 30 years as its treasurer; and served as president of the State Assoc. and 3 years as its treasurer. John was voted into the NESDA Hall of Fame.
John was a member of the Southside Lion's Club where he was past-president. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Lion's International. He served in District 24-D as Zone Chairman, Cabinet Secretary to the District Governor, and Deputy District Governor.
Growing up in the Kempsville area, John and his sisters attended Emmanuel Episcopal Church where he was superintendent of the Sunday School; he also served as lay leader and on the vestry. He and his wife, Martha, were married there in 1941. After the church burned in 1943, John worked on the restoration committee.
Later, John and Martha became members of Old Donation Episcopal Church where John was superintendent of the Sunday School from 1944-1950.
John was predeceased by his grandson Donald R. Hines, Jr. (1974), his wife, Martha (2001), and his sisters Vera Wood Amburn, Margaret Wood Smith, and Louise Wood Lyon.
Survivors include: daughters Jeane Wood of Virginia Beach and Mary Ellen Petersen of Germany, son-in-law Bernd, granddaughter Anika, grandsons Jan and Henrik all of Germany. Also surviving is John's fourth sister, Susie Wood Hill, who turned 100 last October. There are several nieces and nephews.
A Holy Eucharist service will be held at Old Donation Episcopal Church on Jan. 7th at noon by the Rev. Bob Randall and from Medi Home Health Care, The Rev. Horace Montgomery. After the service, Jeane and Mary Ellen will receive friends in the Parish Hall, where refreshments will be served.
