Norfolk - John D. "Skip" Shepard died peacefully July 4, 2013 surrounded by loved ones. Born June 11, 1943 in Burlington, Vt., Skip was a championship skier/ski jumper during high school and college. Skip graduated from Norwich University, with a BA in Government, where he was President - Council on International Affairs and Co-Captain - Ski Team. Upon graduation Skip served in the Army, followed by a career in mortgage banking in Richmond and Virginia Beach. Skip was a Project Manager for AMC the last 10 years.
Skip was predeceased by his Mother, Father and Sister. He is survived by his dear friends Henry and Frances Richardson, Mike and Debbie Hillier, Lorna Donatone, Betsy Hardy and Rufus Parks and many others. Skip cherished his photography buddies Flo Womacks and Pam Jenkins and their Tangier jaunts. Skip was extremely grateful for the compassion of Bruce and Marie Exum and all of the AMC employees, as well as Dr. Carla Acra, Dr. Paul Conkling, Gabrielle Whalen and the staff of VOA. Skip loved and was loved by all the friends of Bill W. where he gave of himself selflessly.
Skip's passion was photography. In a few short years he acquired an eye and a technical expertise that many accomplished photographers take a lifetime to develop. His passion focused on coastal, maritime and landscape photography of his native Vermont and his adopted home Virginia. Skip was a member of Hampton Roads Digital Shutterbug Club and former member of the Va. Beach Photography Club. Skip was selected for juried shows at Norfolk Collegiate (2010), Norfolk Academy (2009, 2010) and displayed his work in a solo show in 2010 at Virginia Beach Central Library.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 22 at Norfolk Botanical Garden, Rose Garden. Memorial donations in Skip's name may be made to Lung Cancer Alliance, P.O. Box 418372, Boston, MA 02241 or a .
