Chesapeake - Reverend John S. Davenport, 89, passed away Friday, August 22, 2014. He was the son of the late Anne and John Davenport, Sr. Rev. Davenport served in the Army during WWII after the army he went on to graduate from Baylor College and attended Southwestern Seminary. He began his full-time ministry as Pastor at Louisa Baptist Church in 1959 and continued pastoring in the Baptist congregations for 34 years. From there he went on to served 10 more years with in the Methodist congregations before retiring.
John is survived by his loving wife of over 54 years, Martha Davenport; son David Davenport; daughter, Miriam Fischer; grandchildren, Christopher Yost, Cameron Yost, Madison Davenport, Tia Davenport; a special niece, Virginia Lynn Haiderer and husband Jim; special nephews, Larry Harrell, and Thomas Argbright.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Kevin Wilson, close friend Dell Morgan, and Sentera Hospice.
A funeral service will be held for John in Aldersgate United Methodist by Rev. Drinkard and Rev. Howlett on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel on Monday from 6:30 7:30 p.m. Interment will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton, GA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions to the Youth Department of Aldersgate UMC 4320 Bruce Rd.
