Joseph A. Wiggins
Portsmouth - Joseph Albert Wiggins, 92, of the 2700 block of High St., passed away on September 11, 2013. He was born in Aulander, NC on April 22, 1921 to the late Luther and Janie Wiggins. He was reared in Ahoskie, NC and attended school in Bertie County. Joe was an Army veteran of WWII. After an honorable discharge, he moved to Portsmouth where he was employed by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a rigger. He also worked at the VA Department of Transportation where he retired after 35 years of service as an auto mechanic. He loved the game of baseball and was an avid Dodgers fan. He also enjoyed playing checkers and working in the yard. He was a faithful member of New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, where he served on the usher board. Joseph was predeceased by his long term friend Flossie Banks and her son Milton; he was also preceded in death by his siblings Tommy, Herbert, Quinton, Lizzie, Allie Ruth, Katie and Gracie and his beloved sister in law Nora Wiggins. Left to cherish his memory are Anita Peele, Tavaris Peele (Tonya), Jeneane Peele, Terra Perryman, Jeremiah Morse, and the light of his life Malachi and My'kira; also Bobby Riddick Sr, Eunice Watson and Barbra Matthews; loyal friend Linwood Baker; and other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; the Canty Family and all of his good buddies at McDonald's on Effingham St. Viewing will be held on Friday September 20, from 3 until 8 p.m. at Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church St. Norfolk. A homegoing celebration will be held at 12 noon Saturday September 21 at New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, 2720 Turnpike Rd. Portsmouth.
