Joseph Douglas Barnak

Portsmouth - Joseph Douglas Barnak, 72, of Stevens Place, passed away Monday, September 11, 2017 in a Portsmouth hospital. A native of Chesapeake, he was a graduate of Deep Creek High School, and retired as a warehouse supervisor for Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Suffolk, and was a US Army veteran. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Ethel Barnak; brothers, Leslie, Charlie, William; and sisters, Betty Jean Brady and Ginny Dietz.

Survivors include his wife, Dessie Brickhouse Barnak; a son, Joseph D. Barnak, Jr. and wife Jennifer and granddaughter, Kayla Barnak of Brownstown, MI; a brother, John James Barnak of Chesapeake; and a sister-in-law, Karla Barnak of Portsmouth.

Friends may visit with the family at the home of his brother, 3015 Bertram St. in Chesapeake.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, September 14, at 10 a.m. in Wayside Baptist Church, 712 Canal Drive, Chesapeake by Pastor Paul Mitchell. Burial with Army honors will follow in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. A reception will be held back at the church immediately following the burial. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Missionary Fund of Wayside Baptist Church or to EDMARC Hospice for Children in Portsmouth.

The family would like to thank all their friends for the prayers. He commented on several occasions how much all the prayers meant.
