Laura Powers Thom PORTSMOUTH - Laura Catherine Powers Thom, 98, passed away June 19, 2010. She was a native of Portsmouth and the daughter of the late M. Leah Creecy Powers and Alton Cridlin Powers. She was married for 51 years to the late Orville Harrison Thom. She was a lifelong Methodist. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Sarah Powers Pickrell Sinclair and her brother, Alton C. Powers Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Powers Thom Quinn, and husband Capt. Q. Karl Quinn, U.S. Coast Guard retired, of Chesapeake; her sister, Jane Powers Brownlee of Portsmouth; her granddaughter, Laura Culbertson Quinn McDermott and husband Robert J. McDermott of Portsmouth; three nieces, Brenda Brownlee Robbins of Corolla, N.C., Gale Brownlee Townsend of Chesapeake, and Ingrid Brownlee Davis of Abingdon; and a nephew, James M. Pickrell of Portsmouth. Deepest thanks are extended to her caregivers, Bernice Ivery and Elizabeth Edwards. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Lawrence Coleman. The family will receive friends at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the ALS Association.
