Lawrence Raines Obituary

Lawrence M. Raines Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Lawrence M. Raines Jr., 71, of the 3800 block of Marlin Bay Court, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 in a local hospital. He was a native of Toledo, Ohio and lived in Hampton Roads most of his life. He was the son of the late Lawrence M. Raines Sr. and Doris Henricy Raines and was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Funk Raines. Mr. Raines attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, Norfolk Catholic High School, Class of 1954 and the University of Virginia and graduated from the Darden School of Business with a masters in business administration. He was the retired owner of Raines Communications, a marketing and advertising firm. He was a member of the Ocean Park Civic League. Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Betty Carol Eberhardt Raines of Virginia Beach; his daughters, Gwendolyn Raines Lewis and her husband Clayton of Gastonia, S.C., Linda Raines Belhorn, M.D. and her husband Thomas Belhorn, M.D., of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and his son, Lawrence M. Raines III, M.D., and his wife Ann Raines, M.D., of Chapel Hill; and six grandchildren, Christopher, Stephanie, Laura, Melissa, Elizabeth and Samuel. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monday, Jan. 10, at noon. The Rev. Father Louis Benoit will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Norfolk chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
